  • Are you sure your using the right terminology? a Flex Account from Nationwide isnt a true basic account on the basis you can have an overdraft with it.

Are you just wanting a fee free card which comes with a card that accepts offline payments?

The RBS Select account (rather than RBS Basic) is free and I believe can come with an offline debit card given it offers an overdraft facility
  • Hi no i have flex account its on sll my statements but i only have the cash card + / cash card visa debit card. but it does work at 24 hour petrol pumps like a proper debit card.

My rbs account was only opened last month the free select account but they only gave me a full debit card where i cant use it at petrol pumps similar to the natwest blue one
  • By "full debit card" I assume you mean online only card (ie the terminal taking the payment must be attached to a network to make the transaction in real time - ie online like the internet).

Offline cards are the ones that can work online but additionally can work when there is no network connection present and the terminal batch processes them (such as petrol pumps).

A true basic account wont give you an offline card because you cannot have an overdraft with them and so there'd be a problem if you paid for something when you had insufficient funds to cover it but because the transaction wasnt done online/ in real time you've already received the goods/ service and gone.

Did you phone the bank and query if you can have an offline card? I certainly had the purple offline card with my Natwest Select account which is a mirror of the RBS Select but the call centre staff were not particularly knowledgable when discussing it with them

Are you? I think you just muddy the water with 'online' and 'ofline' cards, although the OP did use this term too.

What cards do petrol stations accept? It's either all debit and credit cards or (possibly) all cards except Visa Electron and Switch/Maestro.
  • Yeah i have an account with natwest and one with rbs opened an rbs one to see if my options change when they sell there branches on.

I use nationwide as my main account now as there options are better except for direct debits.

I defo need a card where you can use it offline.
  • I basically have poor credit and want a debit card can use at fuel pumps and dont want an overdraft lol

Poor credit history = high risk so an offline card maybe harder to get accepted for.

They accept cards that can be processed not in realtime (called offline transactions). It is a separate matter to if it is Visa Debit or Maestro as Visa Debit can be either an online only or offline + online card. Natwest colour code their Visa Debit cards, blue are online only and purple are online and offline enabled.

If you don't want an overdraft just ask the bank to make it zero. I you want to be unable to get overdrawn you need Visa Electron or Maestro.

Thank you for clarifying this. It's really a news to me that there are two different Visa Debit.
