Help! Post Office car insurance will not add temporary driver living abroad!

All really helpful comments, BUT please remember:
The licence was not the problem - the problem is that the Post Office refuses to add anyone temporarily if they are living abroad.
Hiring a car would have been up to 10 times as much!
The RAC covered very simply online - underwriter seems to be Aviva anyhow. Top marks to them!!0 -
Why not put your address down as his temporary address?0

One of the reasons may be thay if there was to be a claim trying to deal with someone who isn't in the country can be very costly (international call charges for example) and timely. Also what if it had to go to court and the person had to attend that could be a nightmare too.
I know a few companies that will not cover none perm residents.First Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0 -
given the glacier like speed with which insurers operate and the inflated costs they cause via assorted referral fees and intermediary companies I find it hard to believe that the cost of a couple of international calls or the extra postal time would put them off.
Much more likely is it's a knee jerk reaction because they have never covered non residents.0 -
Can anyone help me:
A friend of mine bought a UK registered car, insured and taxed it and used my home address. He has now moved to Italy and his tax disc renewal has arrived and I cannot renew it for him as he doesn't have an MOT nor can he get one as the car in Italy. He has taken insurance out on the car in Italy but I am now receiving reminders from the DVLA saying his car is uninsured. Do I declare it as SORN or do I just explain thing to the DVLA?0
