Basically what Person One and kylyr said.

The RSPCA are the go to organization for everything, from cats and dogs, to cruelty cases, to disentangling swans and providing discounted vetinary care. In that way, it differs from many other animal charities. I know it's a huge organisation, I know it gets a huge amount of funding, but it's also got huge costs attached. The demands on it are relentless.

On an emotional basis, I would love all the animals to live reasonably happy lives in kennels and catterys, with lots of fuss, walks, play and heated beds until the Special Person walks in. But for many the Special Person doesn't walk in.

Dogs trust that don't put dogs down after a time limit, good for them, but of course they have finite resources as well. So if a dog that is a 'sticky' stays for 2 or more years, occupies a kennel that another dog could have had. What happens to the dog that couldn't be fitted in? Maybe goes to a small non-destruct pound, maybe goes to the RSPCA. Perhaps the RSPCA should have a non-destruct policy, but it would mean that it would take less in. It's different sides of the same coin to me.

Money needs to be spent on shutting down puppy farms, educating numpties who want their Staffie to have pups, be it because the dog apparently wants them or for cash.

There just aren't enough homes for all the rescue dogs. It makes me sick and angry, but it boils down to money.
  • Good points made by all of the above posts, and definitely food for thought.
I do agree that the tidal wave of unwanted pets is one which threatens to engulf us all, and that ultimately there just is not always space for the difficult ones to stay in a rescue.
Responsible ownership and early, blanket neutering are things we can hope and dream for.
Still, I know where my donations will be going this Christmas, and also money left in my Will....and it wont be to the RSPCA.

    Photogenic
I am in favour of the RSPCA, Dogs Trust, Cats Protection and other charities promotions of neutering, though I can see many cases where it should be applied to the owners as well

I wont say my "very strong views' on the company called RSPCA but, the rate these animals are breeding at the moment there will be more dogs/cats than us!.

I donated 2,000 this past year to my local cat home in food, toys, beds, blankets and cash. I have a little part time vinyl business which all my profits goes into a pot and every 4 months I take the cash and buy stuff for the shelter.

Why? well.......... My cats came from the shelter and they have given me more than ANY cash/gifts could ever do.

I think the RSCPA should hand out their huge profits to these shelters as 99.9 of the time these shelters do more work in a day to look after these unwanted/loved animals than the RSPCA does in a life time.

My father was an animal lover and in the sixties got a job as an RSPCA inspector in Nuneaton ( before my time) , he went to the local press and resigned from his post as he said he was nothing more than a licenced animal executioner and was very distressed at spending all his time destroying animals or taking them to the vets .
The vet would stand the dogs in a box with an inch of water in the bottom then connect it to the mains in those days and electrocute the animals , some things never change it seems

    Ok I'm gonna say it.............

    RSPCA

When I called you 2 yrs ago saying I witnessed a cat being thrown against a window you did f*** all. I called the police and yes they came out!. The poilce woman and myself picked up a blood soaked cat off the floor and the owner was arrested while I kept held of the cat.
I drove my own car with my own cat cage with said blood stained cat inside sitting next to the police woman to a vets. The vet did his report and it came back as the cat was covered in broken glass, and had bite marks ( human ).

Now RSPCA you then interviewed the owner and you said Oh Mr owner you are a great guy, you love your cat here you go one cat back to ya!

Me and police woman spend time and money trying to get the cat away from this person who has mental health problems but the good old RSPCA kept saying Oh no the cat is fine.

Over the next 4 months I witnessed the cat thrown again the windows, shut up in a cat cage for days!! and on one point see him through the window sticking a lighted match to the cats fur.

I called you Mr RSPCA and yup you did F*** ALL AGAIN!

I wont say what I did to stop the problem but lets just say he doesnt own that cat anymore. ;)

So RSPCA get off your fat waged arsed sitting in your flash office in Watford and put back all the money that you stole from pet loving people who watched your sad tv adverts and give that to the shelters who do more than you. I dont blame the staff who has to wear that joke of a uniform because to most of them its a job, but to the share holders you need to get a grip on life.

    Sorry rant over.

They are rumoured to do it in the van on pick up !

I heard about this happening to someone's old cat, in the van, outside their home. The RSPCA didn't even scan for a microchip, which it had.
