Max. wages before benefits kick affected?

Hi,Can anyone help?:
What's the limit someone can be paid, before their benefits are affected. My friend is hiring somone on a new deal scheme & does'nt want them losing any extra money/benefits they might be entitled to, because he might inadvertently pay a few £'s more & the worker loses £x amount more in benefits.
Hope this makes sense!
Thanks in advance :)

well, it all depends on which particular benefits they get, HB and CTB differ from IS and JSA.

If it's being done under new deal, the jobcentre should be able to advise on how a particular wage would affect the employee. In some cases they can have a protected benefit allowance whilst on new deal schemes.

New Deal for young people only give subsidies if the employment is over 16 hours per week.

If you are talking about this subsidy then JSA will cease as the job is 16 hours per week. The employment subsidy is there to help employers take on people who may need support and training.

Housing benefit and council tax benefit may be payable depending on the wages paid.

your friend will be getting paid to be part of the new deal scheme and has to pay the going rate, the employee might lose some benefits but that happens to all who move from benefits into employment.

I took this from a website:

A lot of people on New Deal 25 plus already have the qualities, skills and experience that your company needs, so you can consider them for vacancies in the usual way. It is also possible to consider candidates through a Work Trial. This is a short, risk-free period for you to assess how you both get on while your candidate remains on benefit. At the end of the Work Trial you decide whether you want to offer the person a position.
In addition, Jobcentre Plus will identify people for you to consider taking on for six months in a subsidised job. During this time we will pay a subsidy to encourage you to give a long-term unemployed person the chance to gain work experience and show what they can do.
    • For every employee you will get £75 a week for six months if the post is full-time (30 hours or more).
    • For a part-time job (16-29 hours) you will get £50 a week for each person.
    • You will of course be expected to pay the going rate for the job.

My friend interviewed the new deal candidate today, things went really well, so they will most prob. be offered the position. My friend spoke to the new deal officer, who is going to make sure that the candidate is not worse off after the 6 month trial.
All that really mattered here was that this person was not in a worst case scanario after my friend hired them & the £75 subsidy wore off, thanks!
BTW, would the job centre know if a candidate has a criminal record?
