Need new heat shield or board?

Hello Above our Wenlock stove, there is a (heat shield/board?) board screwed directly into the stone lintel.

This board is starting to come away and so I need to replace it before it comes down by itself but I don't know what to ask for and which shops stock these eg only specialist shops or somewhere more general like B&Q?

Thanks for any help.

B&Q wont do anything suitable, go to a good builders merchant or have a look on line for fire board

  • Thanks Muckybutt.

Can I also ask a silly question but why does only the top of the inglenook get a fireboard and not the back or sides which must also get as hot as the top?

Many reasons, my stoves has none at all, the only thing I have is the steel register plate above the stove.

The sides of my fire place have been rendered with a plaster bonding coat first then a rough cement finish which is more than enough of a thermal barrier.

The regs are that (if I remember it correctly), any combustible materials must be 3 x the dia. of the fluepipe away - so if you have a 6" dia flue you will have to make sure 18 inches min away from something like a wooden beam over the inglenook?

Im sure you dont mean actually above the stove itself do you. Im assuming you mean on the breast? Only a galvanised steel register would be above the stove.

Heat proof/resistant board by the way. You may even find it on ebay? Have a google

I also have a steel register plate above, and bare brick on the back and sides. I could have had lime render or fireboards at the back and side, but it is not needed, and it eats up space, reducing convection. I think they are for cosmetic reasons since a fireplace will have two layers of brick anyway. In my case the sides do not get particularly hot, only the top gets hot, mainly due to heat from the top of the stove transferring by conduction to the register plate and then to the lintel.

  • Ah this is really interesting and thank you all for your comments. I now feel like I've got an understanding of what and why my stove is constructed in the way it is.

I've just felt above and to both of the sides (both sides have been rendered) of the stove. The fire has been going for the last 2 hours and both walls feel cool to the touch with the top heatshield board feeling warm (not hot).

The gap between the stove and the right & left side walls is 18" each, with the gap from the top of the stove up to the heatshield also at 18".

I'm going to try and hold out until Spring comes before taking the heatshield board down (unless it decides to come down under its own steam). Then we can see exactly what's underneath and what we want to replace it with.

    Thank you all :)
