wifi adaptors

Go for an internal one rather than a USB one, assuming you've got a free slot.
Last August, I put a TP-Link N class PCI Express adapter in a Vista machine and it's been fine. The machine is now running Windows 8 preview without any trouble as far as the networking is concerned.Cost under £15.

You could consider Power line adapters (an example being the TP-Link TL-PA211KIT as sold by Amazon) as an alternative to WiFi.
I assume the broadband modem/router is at some distance to the desktop PC so you can't just use a wire.0 -
Cheapest and Easiest £5
But tell us more about the machine(make and model number) and the position of the Router(also make and model number). If it is far away, you may need something with more gain.0 -
Desktop is a Medion AKOYA E4320 D & the router is a ADSL2+ HUAWEI Echolife HG521.
This is the 3rd router in a year from my service provider & the last two have been faulty. The router is quite near to the PC. I'm not too computer literate as you can probably tell0 -
Do you need wireless if the router is near the PC? Cable is faster, more reliable and free if you already have one, or much cheaper than a wireless adapter if you don't already have a long enough one.

I've had a few big-name ones. Strangely the one that works best is a no-name ebay special that's just like a USB plug with an aerial sticking out of it. Might not be this one, but it looks the same

That'll work too and the price is right.0
