Yay. Just won something on ebay for about one third of its normal selling price, and about half my maximum bid (spot the skinflint).

Not a skinflint, a bargain hunter, and very MSE to boot.

Standard ebay policy for me. Bid low, and when I'm outbid move onto the next item. For items that come up regularly. Sometimes I get into double figures of items bid on before I get one.
But my maximum bid was already a good MSE-ish price, and I won it at half that.
What makes me feel even better about this one is that the other day I bought a computer game, and have now found that including postage I paid £1 more than the standard CEX price. So, this one makes up for it nicely.0 -
This time next year we'll be millionaires.

Congratulations RH - I often find the best bargains are badly or misdescribed ones, with a few added misspellings into the mix!"The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing.

Kind of takes the fun out of it but I more or less buy everything outright nowadays.
I think it is maybe because I don't buy so much just for the sake of it and therefore don't bargain hunt for the thrill of it, but I agree I am always very happy when I do get a bargain. The only thing recently has been a £9 book knocked down to £4 on Amazon (given that the book in question comes in two volumes sold separately I borrowed the other one from a friend - I usually put stuff like that right back on the site after I've read it as I don't have much space to store things I am unlikely to read again) and winning a few Doctor Who old series DVDs in a raffle which cost £1 to enter over successive months of entering (small ticket pool, prizes usually donated by other members of the club in question).
But eBay bidding has been disappointing. I narrowly missed out on a couple of coats about a month ago and then finally found one in a charity shop. Wouldn't have been so bad if they had all gone a lot higher but in many cases I was just outbid even when trying to snipe. My max was an absolute max, and I did eventually find a really nice smart coat for that price, but...some of the stuff on which I bid was even nicer, and a bit more 'me'.
Oh well. When I get my novels published, I hope to be in a better position to match some of the bids. I did take advantage of Smiths selling 16GB USB sticks for £10 last night - cheapest I've seen them in a while and will be very useful."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4

It's great when you get something that you know is a bargain.
My eBay purchases are split into two camps. Things that I need - I bid my maximum, and if I get it, all well and good, or if I don't, I wait to the next one comes along. Sometimes I win at a lot lower than my maximum bid, so that's even better.
Other things, are bids for fun. I like to collect nautical memorabilia, and sometimes, if I can see the asking price starts low, and there's been no other bids, I just put in the starting price bid, just to see what happens. The other week I got a beautiful collectable plate at £2.99. At the moment the similar ones are being sold on the cruise ships for about £25.00, so i got a real bargain.Early retired - 18th December 2014

What happened the auto bid system? Or did i imagine that somewhere?
It kept bidding on the same item in different auctions until you won one.
ipad 32gb £19.99 free P&P.
It would keep bidding until you won one. I think??

I wouldn't want to use a tool that automatically bid on new items where I hadn't had the chance to inspect the auction.
But a tool where you could queue auctions would be useful. Such that if you don't win auction X it would automatically bid on auction Y, and then auction Z if you didn't win auction Y. That would be useful if it exists. I'm surprised a site like goofbay or one of the other sniping sites doesn't do that. Maybe they do.0
