Legal Protection Insurance Add On Query

Options
This is usually sold as an 'add on' to your car & home insurance poilicy.
Cost of it varies but is around £20 per year.
My query is........if you have Family Legal Protection on say your home insurance policy is there any point in having it on your car insurance policy as well ???
I don't think there is any point but I might be wrong........
Any comments welcome.
Thanks in advance.

Have a look at what you get on your home insurance - it may exclude any claims relating to a motor vehicle whilst you are driving.
  • Home legal protection policies usually exclude any claims relating to road traffic accidents. Have a read of the small print.
  • My home insurance is with Esure.
I have had another read through the 'small print' & the only reference to motor vehicles is as follows:-

Any claim relating to the following..

Motor vehicle owned, Leased or hired to you.

So looks like no to motoring issues.

That seems to only relate to contract disputes. Legal defence section also has a motor exclusion but personal injury doesn't.
  • Getting confusing now !!

Motor and home legal protection cover different things.

Home legal protection usually includes -

-Property protection for boundary disputes or someone making a nuisance on the property.
    -Personal injury claims.
    -Employment disputes.
-Contract disputes for goods or services purchased.

There may be other benefits - eg some offer motor prosecution defence, tax investigation, clinical negligence.

Motor legal cover generally covers you for uninsured losses to recover the costs. There may be other benefits that each individual policy can offer.

If you feel you would benefit from these types of cover you can take it with your home / car insurance or shop around and get it separately.

Bear in mind that the insurance companies will be trying to flog this to you as they, comparatively, make a lot of commission on these products.

If you want legal cover, £20 to £30 would be normal but you might find companies offering it free for the first year. It depends how much time you can be bothered to shop around.

Before purchasing have a look at the policy conditions and exclusions - usually you can do this on line. Look out for excess fees or waiting periods before you can claim.
  • What I am trying to find the answer to is in my original post.
There is no point in paying for legal cover on my home insurance AND my car insurance if the both cover the same thing......
  • Your family legal protection policy may not give you the same benefits a motor orientated policy will.

You are certainly covered for making an injury claim on your current policy. There may be an excess you have to pay though, certainly you do with an employment law claim or a consumer dispute (this is how they discourage many people from using the policy for trivial matters)

You can also get motor legal protection free if you search for it.
