Would she have her own TV? It would be easy to tape/dvd her the channels and take it round to her to watch- I'm asusming it's old films and stuff that old folks like to watch that she prefers.?

I'd say go the racial discrimination route too but very nicely. As in 'I would hate anyone to think this was racial discrimination'. If you check out all the details about her getting her own dish and she has a tv in her own room and you agree to deal with all paperwork etc then hopefully they'd relent. I take it there's no one else in the home who might like different tv channels to the ones currently offered? My experience is that often in places like this people go for the route of least resistance so at least it's worth trying to make it easier for them to agree than for them to say no.

Hope you manage it - I'd hate to miss my fave soaps too!

I would think that the company running the sheltered housing would probably be goverened by the care standards agency CSCI or such like and would be required to have an equal opportunities policy, If i were you i would ask to have a copy of this, as im sure your grandmother is entitled to have television which reflects her cultural background, this website may help-commision for racial equality http://www.cre.gov.uk/gdpract/eop_sample.html it is definately discriminatory for them to refuse her to have this especailly as she is willing to pay for it herself, good luck! Yeah its her own flat, but just a warden is on the block in case anything happens
yeah will be possible but just not the best, her friends will ring and talking about the soaps and she wont knows what's happened yet, she'd be behind the times lol
plus shes very proud she wont like us running around, half the reason she doesnt want to move in
if it was films it would be fine we've got loads and just give her a dvd player mainly the soaps and news that are the problem

If your gran likes watching the Indian channels because that's part of her culure, shout racial discrimination at the council very loudly. You should get a very quick reaction and Indian channels provided for your gran.

everyone would rather just not put an offer in on the place if they are unwilling rather than moving in and having to fight for it, she's got cold feet enough about moving without battling for anything (shes only ever lived in her house)
plus we've already had one case in the family really cant cope with another

have told parents to say we'll put in an offer only if a comprimise can be met, if they dont accept we look for somewhere else, if needs be just a flat

I can see your point of view OP. However, the sheltered accommodation should be able to offer your gran the extra support she needs to remain as independent as possible. The complex will most probably have a contract with the local council to provide sheltered housing to residents who are funded by the council. Any such contract will have to comply with the council's equal opportunities policy.
Personally, I agree with you and wouldn't touch this particular complex with a bargepole. Why not contact your gran's social services department and ask for a list of other SH complexes in the district and use the opportunity to explain why the one you had chosen is unsuitable?
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

are the channels available with freeview??? my nan lives in a warden controlled unit and has her own freeview box but they also have sky in the community room.

I personally wouldn't go with the racial discrimination route - the unit has to go with the majority of what the residents want for the community lounge tv. more than likely the majority of them voted for the basic sky package so that was what they had - this way everyone has had a say in what channels they could have (indian channels are also included in the basic package) but if they were to add additional channels just for your gran I guess she would spend the majory of the day watching them which is not fair on the other residents who may only want to watch 1 or 2 programmes on sky but would not be able to as your gran is 'hogging' the community TV.

at my nans unit, the warden has had a rota drawn up for all 40 or so residents so they all get a fair share of the community tv.
some of the residents may swap thir times or sit and watch what others are watching but if it is your time on the rota you can switch to what you want.

we've checked pretty much all of them, (have been looking for years) but shes just being really fussy and doesnt like them, we just dont think she wants to move from her house and is finding reasons not to like them

thats what we were figuring theres no point unless she can get it in her own flat where she has the freedom to not disturb others and ensure she watches her programs
