TV in warden controlled housing?

Hope this is the right place, please move it if not

Basically my grans getting frailer and refusing to move in with us, likes the idea of warden controlled housing because she retains her independance. her main enjoyment is watching the indian channels on sky but moving into the warden controlled housing apparently she will no longer be able to get these channels as they already have sky for everyone and even thought she's happy to pay for extra channels they wont let her, or let her put up her own dish or anything
is there any way of getting these channels (zee tv etc) without having to have another dish etc
not in a cable area but someone was saying they can just do it through the phone line?
dont really care about the cost (within reason)

My dad is in warden controlled housing when he moved in they said he couldn't have sky but now they (council) have rellented as some of the residents got together and said it was against thier human rights for the council to refuse
at the time my dad got his put in as there was so many of them getting it done it only cost them £10 each to get it

plus if it is only supplied in the main lounges not everyone is going to watch the same thing

Not sure if you can get this through broadband, I don't know a lot about that sort of thing, but obviously this would require a computer and broadband connection in her room. You could try calling SKY and see if they can help with this.

    Tel: 08702 40 40 40

A simple alternative might be for you to record a day's worth of TV for her to watch (8hr of viewing with long-play on a 4 hour video). The downside to this is she would be a day behind (assuming you see her every day to give her the previous days recording), plus your TV would need to be left on that channel all day in order to record this. One way to get around this would be for you you to get second SKY box put in and have a dedicated TV/video in one of your rooms to tape the shows for her.

I can't seem to find a phone number to contact Zee tv directly, might be worth giving them a call and see if they can help.

thanks, i spoke to virgin before as someone said that virgin might be able to offer it,
they said niether sky or virgin could offer anything without a dish or cable
they also suggested seeing if she could do it through broadband with a tv tuner, but i dont know if these channels would be available through that
been trying to look at zee's website but its useless will ring them now but wouldnt hold my breath, past dealings with them they have been useless
my parents know all about the place shes looking at so waiting for them to get back to see if she can get a decent broadband package, if there are any restrictions on that
and to see if it is close by enough for us to drop videos to her, the main thing is her soaps so worst comes to worst maybe just recording those and stockpiling other dvds she might like

I've had a quick look, but it doesn't seem to be available through either Top Up TV or an extra on Freeview set top boxes. Virgin Media don't show it on their available channels list either (I know the wardens won't let her install cable). All I can think of is Sky TV via broadband over the internet BUT as far as I know that's not yet available.

Could you get her a video/dvd player and record programmes for her maybe?

If I were you I'd have another go with the wardens at the home. Will she be the only one there who will enjoy the Indian channels? If she's/you're willing to pay I don't understand what their problem is. If the Sky TV is for everyone then it will extend everyone's choice.

Doh! Cross posted with the poster above :)
    Good Luck.

parents have been dealing with the home so im a bit fuzzy on all the details
sounded like they already have sky there but they wouldnt let her add the asian channels onto that or get another subscription of her own. shes not in a cable area so thats out
the guy at virgin was nice (when i eventually got through) and said that apparently tiscali are trialing something called IP tv (tv via internet) and were the only ones to do so where they'd provide all the channels over the net but thats not available yet

will get more details of the home when parents get back but we had been looking for housing where there were more indians so she could get some company but they were pretty impossible to find, (most live with the children but my grans stubborn) so shes likely to be one of the only ones in this place

If your gran likes watching the Indian channels because that's part of her culure, shout racial discrimination at the council very loudly. You should get a very quick reaction and Indian channels provided for your gran.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
