Catalogue Credit Accounts are dreadful!

I do not have one myself, nor do I ever want to have one, but I've been browsing all the top 5 and generally everything seems overpriced and quality of the products is not great.
Take a mobile phone on littlewoods, a samsung galaxy y phone is £130. There's one on ebay, brand new, for £64.99 which also comes with a free £10 top-up.
The clothes are not very fashionable either and are over priced, speaking to others who have credit accounts with next, littlewoods, to name a few, furniture isn't always the best quality either.
I know some may need to use these people if they don't have enough $$$$$ to buy it outright, but to use this people I would have to be very desperate.

Catalogues generally offer pretty poor value, however there are sometimes a few genuine bargains to be had.
Just after Xmas is often a good time to buy, when they're quickly trying to off-load stuff that didn't shift before the big event.
And, as I keep my balance at £0, they send me lots of offers.
It's all about timing. :rotfl:
Sadly, the latest offer I've received from them—£30 off a £60 spend—ended yesterday.
Sale prices with an extra £30 off would have been very nice. :rotfl:0 -
I only buy sale items from Very. It makes them normal price and you can throw in BNPL.
But even BNPL is not what it was. You used to get a year + the normal repayment period - interest free.
Now - if you dont pay in full within a year - the price almost doubles immediately.0 -
Its worth getting a Very account just for the 10% off the first order especially if you are buying a large item like a telly, couple that with 7% cashback from Quidco for a first order and you're quids in. Pay for it then close the account after the first statement.0

I have a Simply Be account as of 6 weeks ago. Mostly because when doing price comparisons on certain toys, SB came up as cheapest. One example, Bob the Builder toy, £30 RRP, half price of £14.99 in Argos, £12.49 in SB. Also means I can pay it back after Christmas when things settle down in January.0

We bought a Sony camera from very. I trawled the internet and stores and it was £30 cheaper there plus 3 months interest free payment.
You are right though, catalogues are not normally good value for money and as usual it is the hard up who suffer.0 -

they have had some very (excuse the pun) good camera deals lately. I bought one that was double in some stores and even cheaper than Ebay.
Used to love it when cashback was 10%. Then it was 8%, then 4% - and now a paltry 1%0 -
As above.
I have recently bought a laptop from very which was £30 cheaper than anywhere else and that was before the 10% off code for a first order and Quidco cashback.
Will be paying it off immediately though.0 -
I bought a couple of Nintendo DSL off VERY, a few years back.
Same price as everywhere else and got them on buy now pay later over 12 months.0 -
Catalogues thrive on the basis that they offer credit to people who can't get credit anywhere else. Therefore on many items they charge a bit more safe in the knowledge the customer has few other options.
Although as proven here there are some very good bargains to be had and discount codes are readily available for most companiesThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Catalogues are also useful for rural shoppers, and really had the whole market before the internet. They still cater well for many older people who aren't au fait with life online, although this is a rather declining market0
