HELP:Backed up data on DVD not readable?

Hi all
I used Nero software to back up some files, text, spreadsheets, pictures, programs etc onto a DVD-R disc. With the long file name extensions I did get a message saying that the disc may not be 100% but I carried on anyway.
The DVD was written to ok or so it appeares. There are all the right icons when you open the DVD disc BUT when you open say a spreadsheet all the information is in gobbledey gook i.e all numbers and mixed up text.
I have e-mailed tech support at Nero and they say tough BUT I don't believe that the data on the DVD is unrecoverable, I think it just needs re-sorting out properly sorta speak.
Does ANYONE know of any shareware or commercial program that would repair/fix/re-scramble all the data on the DVD back into the way it was when it backed it up please?
Many thanks, heres hoping some clever person out there can save my life or preferably save my files!!!!

Always do a verify when you are writing CDs/DVDs. Most good burning software has this feature.
Are all the files corrupted? Even basic TXT files?
Icons dont mean a thing- Windows only bases that on the extensions.
What happened to the data? Can you back it up again?0 -

There's also a handy mirror program which you can find on http://www.tucows.com * which I use to copy and save all my data and sensitive bits and programs I'd hate to lose on to a second drive. It does it LIVE, in the background, and then every now and then I simply copy this second drive onto a CD. Since we're talking COPY rather than compact to back up I've got no problems about later versions not being able to read older back-ups. Something almost every microsnot backup user will have fallen foul of.
* the actual file is called mirrorFULL.exe and is probably listed as MirrorFolder but it's probably easier if you just do a search on "mirror". It's shareware, though not expensive, and I regard it very much as one of my "best buys".Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. A thought has just occurred - did you buy it? Doesn't the trial version time out? I've no idea how long the trial lasts because having seen how easy it was to set up and use I actually bought it the same day.
Anyway...
