Supermarket fuel

Threads like this do tend to pop up every few months and the results are always the same. For all those members that are vehemently opposed to using supermarket fuels there are just as many who post that they never have a problem. I'm in the latter camp btw.0

Well I wouldn't have asked if I hadn't been specifically advised by the man at the garage. I do wonder if he had a hidden agenda - e.g. blame the fuel and not the car they sold me.0

at the end of the day the fuel is different ie bp shell etc put extra

I have nearly always run my cars on supermarket petrol for years and never had a problem, the odd occasion I have used branded fuels I have never noticed any difference in performance or mileage, that includes several company cars and my own Saab's and Honda's.0

I believe the norm is every two years or sooner depending on mileage. So the big question is should you use supermarket fuels? If you car runs fine on it then yes. If you only plan to keep the car for say 3 years then yes. We keep our private cars for around 10 years and run them exclusively on Shell or Shell V-Power. My company car that is renewed every 3 years runs fine on Tesco fuel and also gets me Clubcard points.
We tend to buy new and run cars into the ground. The last two (Rover KV6 and diesel SEAT) lasted for 12 trouble free years and over 150,000 miles each, both were run more or less exclusively on supermarket fuel.0 -
Fuel snobbery?
All of my cars have been run on supermarket fuel without any ill effects.

How do you know if you never ran one only on V-Power?
There are quite a few other differences to fuel.
The cleanliness of the storage tanks, transport, lines etc. also add to the quality, even when it's from the same refinery.
Morissons add 7% bio instead of 5% ....
I know quite a few BP employees who only use Shell!
I know if I had the option for the same price of Morissons Diesel or Shell I would take shell. That doesn't mean at 12p/l off I wouldn't fill up at morrisons....0 -

Where is your proof that Morrisons, Tescos and the other supermarkets don't put the same additives into their fuels? Are you assuming that a higher price automatically means better additives?
Supermarkets are not always cheaper - often big brands match or undercut them. Currently my local Tesco is at 130.9 for unleaded with both Texaco and Shell nearby at 129.9.0 -
I thought that all fuel sold had to meet certain minimum standards and therefore should be suitable for all cars (except maybe the few supercars, and then your not going to worry about price anyway).0

I'm shamefully a premium RON tart when it comes to my beemer, usually in the form of BP ultimate. The difference is noticeable above 5k. I don't get to drive the car very much and work hard so deserve it!
My old diesel 306s fuel literally comes from the supermarket; right off the shelf in the form of vegetable oil.0
