Littlewoods - Buy now, Pay later.

Hi Everyone,

I am a newbie to the forum.

I am just looking for some advice, I missed my payment on a buy now, pay later balance. This was due to me being in hospital and my partner sorting bills out etc, she came across the Littlewoods bill 3 days after the due date upon which she made payment straight away and the guy who was dealing with the payment said everything would be fine due to the circumstances.

Last night however I gets home from work to find a bill from Littlewoods with my account balance at nearly £240.

I rang them and they said that the credit team, would not give any grace on this even due to the circumstances, I pointed out that this was not an issue of me not wanting to pay the bill but I couldnt due to being in hospital. I do realise that this is ultimately an error on my part, but for the sake of 3 days and this being my first missed payment, I thought Littlewoods would perhaps be alittle more leniant.

So I am just looking for some advice really on how to proceed?

Thanks in advance...

I'm a little confused. During a BNPL period you don't have to make any payments towards your purchase. However, at the end of the BNPL period you choose to pay for your purchase in full (with no interest) or spread the cost out over several weeks. However, if you do the latter the interest which accrued during the BNPL period is added to your account.

So, I'm guessing you were paying for other items and had something on BNPL ticking away in the background. And that because you missed a monthly payment Littlewoods have cancelled the BNPL period and simply added the cost of the item (plus interest?) to your account.

As you had no luck getting your point across via the telephone, I suggest writing to them and pleading you case. At the end of the day, you're at their mercy, so be nice.

And, of course, set up a Direct Debit to cover the minimum payment each month, then things such as this won't happen. I don't know why people play Russian Roulette in this way.
  • Sorry I should have been more clear, the item in question was a washer on BNPL which was £299, with a payment due date of 30th Nov.

I had the money put away with the intention to pay the balance off in full around the end of November. However I was involved in a car accident and was admitted to hospital early Nov therefore the need to make payment slipped my mind.

I will write them a letter, explaining the situation (being nice ;)) thanks for the advice.

I wasn't playing russian roulette? as there were no other items on the account and the money was there to be pay the balance off in full, its just that an unfortunate turn of events ensured that I paid the balance just a little later than was needed.

The fact is there can always be an unfortunate turn of events which is why it is always best to have a DD set up for either minimum payment or full balance just to ensure that these types of issues dont occur

If you were in hospital then you could send them a copy of your discharge note with your letter....otherwise I doubt very much that Littlewoods will be understanding and that to their own right

Yeah, try that. Unfortunately even if you are being honest they probably hear that excuse a hundred times a week.

The dog ate my paying in slip etc.

Other than that, take it on the chin.
  • Hi All,

Just to let you know, I have just had a reply email from littlewoods saying that as a gesture of good will they will reverse the charges and set my account at £0.

Yes RichL74 I bet they do and it's people who lie that cost the genuine people who actually have been involved in an accident £££.

    Thankfully lesson learned.
