Toaster / Cupboard problem

Bit of a daft problem here but, had a new (gloss) kitchen fitted with wall cupboards on all walls.
Now I have nowhere to put toaster that is not directly under a cupoard. A friend had the same issue and the heat rising melted her cupboard frame.
I think I am going to have to put it on top of the hob every time I use it - a right pain.
Has anyone got any suggestions? (nice ones!!!!:rotfl:)

Does the toaster have to be in the kitchen?
What are the rooms adjoining/close to your kitchen used for?0 -
Been in my place nearly 14 years, had a gloss kitchen fitted over 6 years ago (or more precisely, kept the existing carcasses since they were fine and the layout was good, and had the doors, mouldings, etc replaced with gloss ones).
My toaster has been in the same spot on the worktop underneath a wall cupboard since, and nothing has melted so far. I've just measured the gap between the top of the toaster and the bottom of the cupboard: 27cmNow free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -
How far above the toaster is the cupboard? What is the cupboard made of?
It shouldn't be a problem but you could always test it first and see how hot the cupboard gets.0 -
Use the grill instead.0

Surely the wall units aren't as deep as the worktop?
I have my toaster nearer the front edge of the worktop and have had no melting.0 -
Thanks! everyone, The space from my worktop to the bottom of the cupboard is only38cm. I have lowish ceilings and the cupboards are a bit taller than those little dinky ones.
From the top of toaster to bottom of cupboard is only 23cm and if you add on the front frame of cupboard it is only20cm gap.
Testing it, I thought there was too much heat coming out to chance it.
I went for the large 4 slice one when I now realise the 2 slice would have been easier to place. Had it too long so can't return it.
I have units in an L shape so there isn't much of an option to move it anywhere else without it being dangerous. (i.e. front of worktop)0 -
Mines on top of my freezer due to lack of electrical points, but if due to lack of space you can't use it on a worktop, what sort of hob do you have? My friend bought one of these from ikea
to use over her hob when she needs more worktop space (as she has a tiny kitchen).
I put a tray under my toaster (and George Foreman etc) so that if I need to move it to use it, it's much easier.A waist is a terrible thing to mind.0 -

Don't forget it's not direct heat, like from a grill, it's indirect heat that rises by convection and much of it will drift forwards and rise to the ceiling.0 -

When I fitted an Ikea worktop, I was also advised to buy a strip of reflective plastic from Ikea to fit under the worktop, over the oven. It's supposed to prevent the heat from the oven, when you open the door, from directly hitting the underside of the worktop.
I tried searching for it, but can't find it on Ikea's website. I can only describe it a "heat deflector strip". It's silver grey, about 50mm wide, 900mm long self adhesive. Probably cost £2.99 or so. You could put three of them together, or find somewhere that sells wider versions ?0 -
Kitschkitty, My hob is a black ceramic hob with an extractor above it so no obstructions. I think I am going to get a tray to sit it on (like you said) and when in use put it on the hob.
mart.vader, I wonder if the deflector strip is the same sort of stuff you put behind radiators to deflect heat?
Anyway, thanks everyone for your help in what is a really silly problem.
The thing is, when you design your kitchen, you don't really know how the layout etc is going to work untill it is done and then you find you have made a few mistakes.0
