It's not strictly bringing up old news, it's the same old news just new figures to go along with it! They also just announced £40m worth of supplier support yesterday which effectively gives suppliers a 2.5% stake in the company & announced greater access to stock on consignment. (i.e. they don't pay for the stock until they sell it)

HMV's sold off the majority of their assets now, they're heading to break covenant in January & April/March - bleak just about begins to sum it up!

My grandad told me he was getting OH a hmv gift card. I asked him not to given the current climate and kindly requested either cash or something safer like asda but I'm sure he's still got him HMV anyway :(

I would definitely be spending any gift cards during or just after Christmas.

As others have said they have been in trouble for ages now.

Unless there is a dramatic change of fortune, they are unlikely to be around this time next year.

Shame, but another company who failed to adapt to the online world quick enough. When they did start to adapt, they fell down on even simple things, like charging for postage for the first few years on their website.
  • Will they get wound up?

Earlier this year I bought a CD in my local HMV (which has since closed down after the first wave of news that they were in trouble). The sales person asked me if I would like a loyalty card. I said ok until he tried to charge me £3.00 to 'buy' their card! I have never previously been charged a fee to have a loyalty card so I refused it. I wonder how many customers did buy one.

More than a few of them as many stores ran staff incentives based on them...

And that wasn't the first wave of news they were in trouble, the writing's been on the wall for a long while now - share price has been dying on it's backside for 3-4 years.

If you have to buy gift vouchers, then buy ones which can be used in multiple shops, at least if one shop goes under the vouchers ain't useless.

As for HMV, with some of the prices charged for DVDs and music, (£10 for a 20 year old album) the writing is on the wall. Sadly.

If you get HMV gift vouchers for Christmas, use ASAP. Even if its on an overpriced DVD, something is better than nothing.

HMV is just about the only places you can walk into and browse through the CDs.
It seems the 'younger' generation prefer to 'download' - so why is it the music in the stores always cater to a 'younger' audience.

Moreover because they are based in the UK any profit they do make is taxed - unlike Amazon!

Its the only major CD store left.

Our Price, MVC, Music Zone, Fopp, Virgin/Zavvi. All gone. Even supermarkets are slowly reducing the space for Cds.

Soon all that you can buy on the high Street new will be top 40, with a small selection of older CDs (released in past 2 years), and independent record stores.
