Does anywhere accept 'unwearable' clothes/shoes?

I've got some old clothes and shoes which are too scruffy to be worn so can't go to a charity shop, but it feels wrong to just throw them away.

Is there anywhere which accepts textiles to be reused/recycled in someway if they aren't good enough to be sold on a 2nd hand?

Thanks!

Yes, don't throw those things in landfill!!
That's what I think would be classed as rags.
I think both clothes and shoes would go in those bags. Check with your local charity shops. Our 2 ( two different hospices) hospice shops happily take rags and they were getting about £5 per bag last time I asked. I always label the bags very clearly.

Alternatively the shoes can go in a shoe bank. Our shoe repair shop has a bin as does Clark's shoe shop. I think the shoes go to Africa where they are recycled.

Help the Aged actively ask for them, class them as rags and sell them.

If you want the money, albeit it small, quite often shops are around that buy "rags" and will give you a few pennies for them. I much prefer to give them to local charity who will hand them in as rags and get 1st rate of pay, rather than taking to my local shop and getting 2nd rate of pay :D
  • I think most of the charity shops can sell rags to recycling companies. My local Shelter shop has a notice in the window saying that they accept clothes in any condition because the ones which aren't suitable for sale in their shop are sold for recycling, and Oxfam has its owning recycling plant where the shops can send unsaleable clothes. If your donation consists entirely of rags, it will help shop staff if you label it thus, to save volunteers time in sorting donations.
  • Great, thanks for the advice, will ask at my local charity shops.

Our Air Ambulance service have "clothes and textile" bins dotted around the area. Anything they can't sell as clothes gets sold on as textiles/rags so they will take anything (including shoes).

cash 4 clothes have been getting a lot of bad press, see the up you income board for more information.
  • Cash 4 clothes only want good quality stuff {CLEAN, DRY, WEARABLE}. Anything of lesser quality should go to the charity bins for "fabric recycling". No textiles need go into landfill.
  • we can put out our unwanted clothes and shoes paired up with our recycling if any of my stuff is not good enough for charity shop that is what i do
