iPhones

Wasn't quite sure where to post this, so posted it in two places, not sure if that's allowed.
Did post this on someone's else, but thought I'd start my own as I found I had more questions!
I'm giving my daughters (4 and 2) my old iPhone for Xmas. Will they be able to still play all the apps on the phone as I'm getting a new iPhone? I'm gona have the same apple id, so just checking they'll all still work both on my new phone and their one.
Just thinking though, some people might have an iPad and iPhone with the same apple id, so how does that work? I really am a bit clueless about these things.
Plus, what's the difference between an iPod Touch and an iPhone, just the fact that one can make calls?
I don't have an iPad, but assumed apps were bought in a similar way to an iPhone - do you have to plug it into your computer like an iPhone?
And finally, question after question! How would people suggest I go about rationing apps for my older daughter? At the moment, she always wants some upgrade to some colouring game she's playing, she accepts no, but I just wondered what other people did. Let her buy 2 apps a week for example?

Does a 4 and 2 up year old really need an iPhone. Perhaps something more suited to their age would be better.2012 wins! can of deodorant, a personalised Bean, craft show tickets, Top Gear Live Tickets, Case of sourz fusion0

I don't know whether Iphone workd without SIM card. When my sis recently got new one we couldn't finish set up and start using it until we put in SIM.
Take your SIM out completely and see what the phone lets you do.
What do you mean pluging Ipad into your PC? Ipad is kind of a PC, so I would think that that point would be redundant? What do you plug your Iphone in for? I buy apps via Iphone, I ever only plug Iphone in if a/there is a big latest software update b/I want to download physical CD into it.
You will be buying apps for Ipad straight to download to your Ipad.. certainly no need for PC for that?0 -
See, I really am a bit dense when it comes to these things, haha. I plug my iphone into the computer as it "syncs" (is that the right word) and does the updates etc? And it saves all my pics to the computer.
I won't be taking the sim card out of my old iPhone as it's an iPhone3 and so the sim won't fit in the new phone as I'm getting an iPhone 4.
As for whether my 4 and 2 year olds need an iPhone, no of course they don't. I wouldn't be going out buying one, but they like playing with mine at the moment and as it's going to be redundant, figured I might as well give it to them if it will still work.Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

Yes, I plug mine to sync it, but that is just for back up.. And now you can back up to cloud.. you don't HAVE to do that. I don't own an Ipad though, so I don't know whether there is a reason you would want to plug it in for specificaly.
Unless you are still going to be paying for the old SIM card (ie different number, paying for 2 contracts) then the SIM card will go dead.0 -

Yes, I agree. go out and spend money on something else and then put the Iphone into your drawer to collect dust.
Sorry, I couldn't resist.:D
The OP is not going out specificaly buying it for them, is she?
though perhaps you could get some money for it OP? From recycling?0 -
Yes as far as I am aware an Iphone will work without a sim as long as you link in the wifi for some of the games that require internet access.
Kids love playing games on phones, much like the games I had as a child and Gameboys except they just so happen to be on a phone.0 -
you just need it connected via wifi if you wish to download anything from the store, or as above play anything that requires connection to a server somewhere "out there".
it will retain it's existing apps, you can also adjust settings when it syncs to itunes, and add/delete apps/music/videos if required. you can link at least 6 i-devices to itunes under the same account, and they can all display different configs
have a look on the apple forums
it's a good idea to re-use btw.Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?0 -
Thanking everyone for their replies.
I think it's the really old version. I've had it three years now.
I'll give it to the girls and see what happens.Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

You can also restrict the in-app purchases and other things so they don't accidentally spend a ton of money on pony glitter coins or something. Got to Settings --> General --> Restrictions....then go through and pick what you want to lock down. It's also better to take the Sim out, in case they make calls by accident.0
