Confused about currency in Malaysia

Hello

I am off on honeymoon to Malaysia and want to know whats best to take. Usually take cash and happy using a hotel safe but someone had mentioned that might not be the best idea in Malaysia. Quite a naive traveller and not really been outside Europe and the US. It seems all charges with the prepaid card but would hate wondering around with my debit/credit card.

Thanks

Perhaps check reviews regarding the hotel's safe.

Travelled all around Malaysia by bus with my cards, never had a problem.
  • It is safe in both ways. Better is if you have few bucks in your wallet and make minute transactions by cash and others by your debit/credit cards. It will definitely help save your money.

Earlier this year hubby had his wallet lifted out of his bag when we were at a market in Kutching. Nightmare to sort out while there, however we got most of the money back via our insurance. Trying to sort it out via the phone was very difficult, cancelling cards etc, overseas call centres.
Check your travel insurance, don't take more cash than you are insured for. take a card each that is not linked to the same account. We love Malaysia and are going back Feb 2013. We are just that bit more careful, it could have happened anywhere.
Also got a hubby Pacsafe wallet with a chain.

Personally, I found Malaysia to be one of the safest places I've ever visited - but like everywhere you shouldn't leave your common sense at home. Take out enough cash with you for the day plus one card then leave other cash and cards plus your passport in the hotel. If travelling as a couple split the money between you.
