I can receive emails fine but cant send them, coming up with an error code/message - The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.freeserve.net (2)', Server: 'smtp.freeserve.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
We just swapped internet providers last week so would that be the cause - from Orange to BT? Cant really understand what the problem is - and which company to ring - we are still using orange email address!
Thanks

Try checking your Account Settings in your email client. Pretty sure you shouldn't have that (2) there after pop.freeserve.net
It should be 'pop.freeserve.net' on your outgoing settings. If your settings are fine, try to find out with outgoing port you need to be using if you've changed email address. Sometimes they are not default ports.Professional Data Monkey

You will need to change the following settings.
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - mail.btinternet.com
Port (usually specified in 'Advanced Settings') - 25
Switch on SMTP authentication. 'SMTP authentication' is usually switched on by ticking a box called 'My server requires authentication' in your email client settings. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

That'll probably be it. It looks like Freeserve is owned by Orange now. Since you've now left them I guess they will have disabled your Orange email account too.
Probably a good idea to use a third-party email provider (like GMX) or register your own domain name if you'd prefer not to have to change email addresses in future.0 -

Over the years in many Operating systems and mailboxes have had this error (Outlook, Exchange, Thunderbird ect)
Very easy to fix just change your default email address and pop settings to B.T settings or get the bt settings form BT here is a guide which will wizz you through it all.

P.s freeserve are no longer around anymore they was wannadoo for a while but now orange so i presume your email would be someguy@orange.co.uk for example hence the error because you can receive email form the smtp but the Pop cannot be found"MSE Money saving challenges..8/12/13 3,500 saved so far :j" p.s if i been helpfully please leave me a thank you but seek official advice at all times from a pro0 -

Ports are just your computer connections inward and outward to the internet so say for example if your mail box needs the port 110 to find your mailbox you just change it to that
anyway glad you got it sorted

when you send a request to your internet service provider from your machine say for email it goes to something called a gateway on a server( a computer which acts to servepages or mail requests for all hence the name)
if its required just tick it with your email and password to log in
sometimes its needed sometimes its not it depends on your provider setup
