Think you might struggle to get a good example for £6k unless you're willing to look at very high miles - If I was selling my 57 plate EX (which has the nav etc) privately I would be looking for £5.5-6k- If you're after a 2 year newer car with lowish miles and purchasing from a trader I would be surprised if you can find a well looked after example for that cash, would have thought a 2009 car would be more like £7-7.5k

For the OP though yes the civic is worth considering - I'd buy one that's had a 2009+ clutch fitted as these are made of slightly stronger chocolate than the originals.

I found one with 107k on it. Mileage doesnt phase me much as my old man is a mechanic and will help me care for it, and I will stick 20k a year on it and run it until it dies. the EX is the one I am shopping for, I have found one but I will not have all my savings until Jan so I cant make a move for it yet...

Even at 100k i'm slightly surprised if it's a 2009 car, early 2008 less so - mind you it seems there is still the general fear over any car that's done 100k or more which drives the price down a bit.

I'll be interested to hear how you get on though whenever you pick one up. They're decent cars, especially with a remap and uprated clutch & new fly when the inevitable happens

The Hyundai's not a bad shout.

And funnily enough Worried Jim, i was looking at Boxter's today as i suddenly thought 'They must be cheap by now?'. he he.

You could get a 3-4yr old sub-100k miles BMW320d (estate/saloon) for £6-8k. Solid engines, good chassis, enough room to chuck stuff in and pretty frugal on fuel.

Part of the Furniture 10,000 Posts Name Dropper I've helped Parliament
Skoda Octavia 1.8 L&K, more toys than a royal child.

Estate if going for a dog.

    consider the DSG

if you can't find an L&K some Elegance may have the toys you need.

    no cambelt
    reasonable servicing.
goes like a train and 40mpg

there have been some good 08 ones with 60k+ miles up around £5k-£6k
not many about so might need a wait. 10k will get a lower mileage <3years ish.
  • Your choices there look very sensible - a mix of vehicles very well thought-of: You do actually want a good car if you have to live with it, so Fiesta, Focus and Golf are all top of their class. My other consideration would be warranty, in which case your other options are pretty sound also - they have long manufacturers coverage don't they? Might be able to shop around for a third party warranty extension anyway...

I'm with you on cruise control for motorways, and Bluetooth for when you are stationary on the motorway!

Have a drive, often something just clicks.
  • Late 2009 Mini Cooper, 50mpg on the motorway with the cruise control on at 70, likely to have the balance of MINI TLC (so another 2 years servicing included). £100 a year road tax too. Most will be bluetooth prepared, you just need to find one with the multi function steering wheel to get cruise control.

If you can live with a 1 ltr hatchback:
    VW up!
    Skoda Citigo
    Seat Mii

all the same car basically, Skoda the cheapest.
50+mpg realistically (69 quoted ) £20 pa tax, 3 years £99 servicing deal, plenty of options, start at £7995 brand new.
Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

Thanks all! I am 30 mins from FOW - been before pretty good...

What about a 308? You can pick up a 1 year old 1.6 diesel, top of the range with 10-20k on the clock for 10k. Ok they depreciate - worth 5 k in maybe 2-3 years but they look like they tick all the boxes if you can get over them being french!?

now thinking a Hyundai i30! A one year old i30 (old shape now) is 50% off rrp and still a quality car..

Pains me to say it, but - That's actually not a bad shout by a long way. I've driven lots, most of which have been hire cars so had hard lives, and they're well put together. If you like an auto, it's probably the best none-tip box you'll find.

Me. I'd spend 500-1000 on what I came across that ticked the boxes and find something else to spend the other 9 grand on.

That or I'd get tempted and get the Boxster, don't forget your service and maintenance costs though... no such thing as a cheap Porsche (trust me I've had two).
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
