Battlefield is the largest-selling FPS game series to date is it not? (BF1942 onwards - fair enough that COD/HALO etc match or exceed unit per unit sales now but the BF series still has the lead.) Personally I gave up on it after Bad Company 2, as I have with most FPS these days as they're all just dumbed down console ports, not to mention the Origin system that EA are plugging these days.
Planetside 2 isn't the best but it's hugely imersive and it's a born and bred PC shooter. Makes it top notch in my book.
OP; Sorry for the thread hijack.0 -

Retail? Quite possibly. Digital distribution - for the PC in particular - is another matter entirely and in any case doesn't answer the question: is this game fun?
Alas, the answer to that one is entirely subjective.0 -

You'll get no argument from me on that one chap - can't remember when I actually purchased a retail game. Not to mention when you do, you often have to spend hours downloading several large 'updates' anyway via Steam etc which seems to me to be a bit daft considering you could just have downloaded the entire game to start with.0 -

Only cautions I'd make is
1- Some of the games mentioned to date are a little dated, if he was after them he'd possibly have mentioned them/saved up for them already
2-Steam always has several very good value daily post xmas sales so I'd wager all games mentioned above will be 50%-75% off at some point immediately after xmas -hence possibly some form of steam wallet gift card would maximise games per £ value you get plus see him end up with something he wants
3-In the interim recommend he plays Planetside 2 -free to play and a very well polished multiplayer coop (Planetside 1 was groundbreaking in its day, the sequel is high quality and has moved to a microtransaction business model but at least being free-to-play he can try it to see if he likes it)0
