Need Advice from Avid Gamers please

  • Arma2 is the closest thing the BF3's scale other than Planetside 2. Although Arma2 is a completely different pacing so who knows if he'll like it. And Planetside 2 is free 2 play so buying it for him won't mean too much.

As other folks have said a headset is nice. Look at some reviews (I really like my Creative Fatal1ty headset and it's lasted about four years now). I find mice something I'd rather handle physically before buying.

Another idea may be a steam wallet gift card from GAME. Although I don't see them on their website, they do them in shops. Or at least I'm told they are. If he's really into PC gaming then chances are (in my opinion) he already has a steam account so it'll be easy to use.

    *afterthought*
Does he have the downloadable extras for Battlefield 3? They contain additional maps and game modes to play on. If not then they may be good buys. You would have to ask him directly about it though.

Unfortunately he had a headset for his birthday so that's out, he has the 'premium pack' for BF3, but yes he does have a steam acount, so a gift card would be a good idea, thank you.
  • He's 15, I'm Ok with him having 18 rated.

Just curious, would you buy him a bottle of vodka for Christmas? Or a !!!!!! DVD?

Only asking because it comes up regularly in the press about violent games "harming" young people, but then parents seem to dis-interested in age restrictions on games compared to other things
  • All I can really say is he prefers collaborative multiplayer, rather than playing on his own, gameplay is more important than the latest graphics, maybe something to challenge the mind as much as the trigger finger?

Mindbending co-op? Portal 2 it is then:

Of course I wouldn't buy him vodka, he much prefers whisky...

Just a point about ARMA - extreme realism vs BF 3.

My ex loved arma and Operation flashpoint, but hated the BF games because they felt arcady.

Portal 2 is amazing, so +1 to that. it's also side splittingly funny so he may enjoy the single player mode.

Your son is in to First Person Shooters so the game he has (BF3) is one of the best out there so it's hard to suggest similar.

One thing I would get is a decent gaming mouse - they are much more accurate than a standard mouse and have more buttons which is perfect for FPS games. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Razer-Abyssus-Mirror-3500DPI-Gaming/dp/B003LKIBNO/ref=sr_1_14?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1355789931&sr=1-14

As for game suggestion I'd say him trying this would be good http://www.planetside2.com

It's a free-to-play game so it doesn't cost a thing - will keep him happy for hours/days/weeks/years and the server hosts upto 6000 folk - BF3 hosts about 64! You can always buy him some in-game currency from the website so that he can buy some new guns etc if he likes the game.
