January 2013 Grocery Challenge

Things not going too bad for me. We went out to buy fresh veg/salad stuff for the week but also bought some tinned toms and cereal. OH off work at the moment and he generously offered to sort out the chest freezer in the garage and list what was in there. He found 6 pheasants that my brother had given me at some point. Problem is I can't remember when - but it must have been at least a year ago, if not two! Tomorrow I'll be busy creating a spreadsheet of the freezer contents and then meal plan until the end of the month.Books - the original virtual reality.

When my son went rummaging in the small chest freezer last week, on the look out for cheese, he removed a good third of the contents and gave up as his poor hands got cold. Big wuss!
I didn't tell him the trick is to put gloves on before diving in..... :cool2:Grocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

Ok this is def the thread for me. My shopping bills for myself, hubby and three kids used to be around 150 per week:eek::eek: I have now started to shop wiser with farm foods and tesco to desperately try and get the bills down. I went shopping for my first proper shop since Xmas and it was 120 tesco. 40 farm foods and 25 in pets at home for the rabbits and dogs for about 3 weeks. I should operculum spend only about 40 per week for the next 3 weeks. I really want to get the bills down to around 250 per month. Any suggestions??? HELP x
When you say you want to get the bills down to £250 a month, do you mean food bills for your family and pets or are you including heating costs, utilities etc?
Do you meal plan? Do you currently write down a plan of what your family will eat for the week/fortnight/month etc?
Making a plan using what you already have in that you can base meals around, can significantly reduce your grocery spends.
Also, do you write a list of the food that you need to buy or do you just put things in your shopping trolley without having a list to guide your shopping?
I am certain you will get lots of help on this threadGrocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

Another NSD yest xx0

OK, cool - another NSD yesterday. They're racking up now! I'm hoping today will be another NSD for me today too, as I really don't fancy going out in the snow and ice. I had planned to do a Shepherd's Pie tonight and might do it yet but I was going to base it on a portion of Bolognese sauce I had left over from Friday night. On a second inspection of the Bolognese Base I have only enough for one portion, so I'll turn that into lunch. I have a few options - one of those "pies in a tin" that my sister got me in a hamper for Christmas, with chips, taking some chilli con carne out of the freezer and having that instead, or doing something completely off the mealplan wall and seeing if I can make wraps for fajitas!
I'm determined to use a little ingenuity today rather than going to the shops. If I can double it up with the oven going on so I can bake something sweet for the tin then so much the better!
I feel a batch of oat and raisin cookies are on the cards
Have a good day, take care.

A Food spend yesterday of £9.84.
I think i'm doing really well this month. When i first did the GC last year i was spending anywhere between £500 - £700 pcm on food in and out of the home, for 7 of us. Now there's only 4 of us and i have 100% control of the money i think this is great improvement.

I have spent £41.56 so far this month which I am happy about (there is just me). I am doing this challenge along with the eating out of the cupboards and freezers one, so I have of course eaten more than £41.56 worth of food.
One thing I have done is separated out anything that is not food including newspapers which I used to include as I bought them at the same time as my food. Also any eating out, coffee etc has been given its own budget.
