Non paying bidders - why?

More of a rant, but in 7 years of being on Ebay, I've just had to sort out my first non paying bidders case. I wish people would be honest if they bid/purchase an item then change their minds if they don't want it.
I've followed things by the book, send them an invoice, after 3 days sent them a (polite) message asking if they still wanted the item, if they didn't, please could they let me know, so I could raise a cancellation request and relist the item. After no response, I then opened a non paying bidders case, still had no response or payment, so ended closing the case and relisting the item. Also have blocked them from bidding on any other items I sell.
I'm just so mad. What kind of kicks do people get from doing this? Rant over

To be honest, having avoided any NPBs for 7 years is an impressive record! So, I wouldn't feel too down about it

From memory, I think the first time I encountered one was about a fortnight after listing my first items on eBay!
NPBs used to annoy me. I used to send polite messages and found that all that happened was that the NPB would grudingly pay and leave a bad DSR or two, so now I just launch a NPB case after 4 days, then close it after another 4 and move on.
I must admit, I do feel considerable satisfaction when a recent NPB case messages me to plead for me to do something, after they've found they're blocked by other seller's tight bidding requirements... I simply message back that
'regrettably';) after their having ignored repeated payment requests, the situation is out of my hand and suggest they contact eBay. "The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing.
...If you can fake that, you've got it made."

I am running at about 1 in 200 - 300 non payers per sale ratio at the moment, although it varies and it is usually much better than that.
The rate is one reason why I will not pander to non payers by asking them if they want to cancel, or allowing a mutual. They get an invoice and then a case opened on day 4 - and that's it.
Don't forget to set your seller requirements to block bidders with more than two strikes in the past 12 months. This is my new campaign, can we please ensure every time we talk about non payers that we remind people to block them- and then maybe these time wasters will get the message.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I've unfortunately have had 32 non paying bidders so far this year. Funny thing is they bought other stuff while ignoring my emails, and Ebays emails.
And it's always bidders of ten or less.
Never used to be like this on eBay before:mad:0 -
Thanks for the replies. Yes I've blocked them from bidding for any items I list in future.
To be fair, the non paying bidder had 230 feedback, all 100% positive, so it's not as though they're new to Ebay.0 -
I think sometimes they're drinking wine in front of the TV then when they realise they've bid far too much than they wanted to pay and they can't afford to pay it, they just ignore you. That's the trouble with internet shopping - you're not necessarily sober when you buy.Addicted to saving money :j (or just tight)0

I think I've been unlucky recently, in the last three months I've had 5 non payers, and thats in spite of me having my bidder preferences set to weed out people with previous non payment strikes.
If people haven't paid I send an invoice after two days, open the NPB case on day 4, and if there's still no payment, close it as soon as possible on day 8.
It is a bit annoying, but I don't get wound up over it any more. Non payers are unfortunately part of eBay life, so I just deal with them as above when required.Early retired - 18th December 2014

I have one buyer at the minute that has 17 feedback and 100%. She has not paid me yet and has not contacted me. Looking at her feedback is a sea of green, but 9 of those all say she didn't pay.
Really annoys me that people don't open NPB cases and leave the feedback instead. If all of these people have of opened cases then she would have been banned by now instead of being allowed to keep doing this.;)I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY;)0 -

Most of my non payers have loads of feedback, my last had over 4000.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Sorry if I'm being a numpty, but do NPB's automatically get a "Strike" when you close the case?
My 100% + NPB has ignored all polite emails and the fact I opened a case 3 days ago.
Is there anything I need to do to make sure it's on their record?
(Don't plan on leaving ANY feedback
!)

As long as you have done the full NPB the buyer gets a strike as soon as the case is closed.
Don't forget now- spread the word about blocking buyers with 2 or more strikes everyone.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
