Cheap smartphone which does not automatically store apps on phone memory.

I want to get a cheap smartphone for my son. The phone bit does not matter so much as he really wants it to play games(he has a nintendo DS but is starting to get bored of it).
For this reason what I don't want is one of those android phones which store apps and games in the phone memory instead of external storage such as SD cards. I have used apps to transfer from phone memory to SD but this does not work all the time and for my friend's sony experia x1 it did not work at all. I know that later versions of android store on sd automatically but I have also read that there are still some files which refuse to budge.
So can anyone recommend what i should go for?

    No such thing exists.

For android phones it's a matter of the OS ('ROM'), not the phone. Most recent OSs and custom ROMs offer more flexibility with storing apps. My 'Cyanogenmod' 2.3.7 allowed me to move almost all apps I downloaded to the SD card.

I am assuming that a cheap smartphone would have a small amount of phone memory which could do without apps and games getting shoved in there as well.

My friend's flashed my friend's xperia x1 to froyo and then gingerexperia which supposedly allowed you to transfer apps to sd but it kepr spitting out a message saying that it was 'failed to move application' for every single app and game I tried.
Maybe I need a value phone with a large internal memory to give my son a bit of room to work with should the OS not transfer apps to SD.
