PayPal debt collectors are not nice and while you decide what to do you might be best advised to go over to the debt board here on MSE and get proper advice as to what debt collectors can and can't do.
You will get harassed, you will have your life made unpleasant by them so before the hassle starts know what they are allowed legally to do, so you can report them if it goes too far.
Obviously you've now lost the ability to use eBay and PayPal ever again until the debt is cleared. That might not be a problem now but maybe In a few years you may want to use them again, but the debt will still be thereI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Some good advice in there. Others have given their opinion on this, I will only carry on with what can happen.
Your credit rating can not be affected by Paypal if they don't take you to court.
Only Paypal can take you to court, not debt collectors or anyone else. Debt collectors can only add charges to paperwork, you are not obliged to pay them anything. Your debt is with Paypal.
If you think you have a case you can give evidence to a judge (should they take you to court) and let them decide if you owe the money. If it does get that far and you lose you will also have to pay their legal fees and any other charges.
If you have the full name and address of the buyer you can take them to court..0 -

You may have lost £500 odd now but the sort of money you could be missing out on in the near future will amount to a lot more. Years of selling your unwanted items on ebay and being able to use paypal to make some cash. Getting the best loan, mortgage rates etc because you have no ccjs.
Much better to pay up the £500 now and see it as a way of securing your financial future and a hard lesson learnt.0 -
The courts can make you pay their costs if they think you should've settled the debt before it ever got to court....mckennal05 wrote: »Like my reply further up this same post, searches havent said anything about a CCJ as such, and i dont think they would take it to court as am sure their cost would be more than 535 to them,0 -
Also the cost/reward ratio for taking legal action for over £500 are not prohibitive. I'd say any debt over £200 is more likely to end up in court, it isn't that costly.RainbowDrops wrote: »The courts can make you pay their costs if they think you should've settled the debt before it ever got to court....
I've no idea if Paypal pursue all these cases to court but would hope that they don't just write them off and us other poor sods that use it end up paying..0 -
what happens is it goes to iqor paypal/ebay debt collectors. they then constantly call and ring you and send you letters. if you dont pay i would imagine for that amount the may go to court. all this then trashes your credit rating and also,is very stressful. sadly they dont go away.James tucker

If it went to court, then if (when) they win, then it's YOU that has to pay their costs, so your debt would be £535, plus their (reasonable) court costs.
Very much worth it for them.
You've been offered some good advice, so I suggest you take it before you live to regret it years later potentially...Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
I am thankful for everyones advice and help, and i will take it onboard believe me

but further has developed, ive contacted both xbox and paypal and insisted that an investigation be done on both parts and that cross referencing information is key as i want to know that the IP address of this supposed hacker is not the same as the IP of the registered paypal owner, and it turns out to be a falsified claim.
I also forgot to mention my original ebay post which started the scam, was CD case + free gift of my virtual item, would this help MY case ( no pun intended) in anyway, or not as i still have the cd and no address for him ?
If push comes to shove ill pay paypal back in £1 increments over the few years,
( sorry for the late reply i didnt realise this carries on over 2 pages
haha ) 0
