Best mosquito repellants that work?

We are going to Rhodes at the end of May and apparently it is really bad for mosquitos.

Do the plug in things really work and what are the best repellants?

My brother said they hate garlic and to eat garlic capsules for a week before hand but surely it being odourless defeats the object?

I bought Ben's 100 from asda before my trip to the maldives in january and we didn't get bit once. We also had a boots plug in the room and put jungle formula cream on our legs every evening before going out. I was advised to have vitamin b1 capsules for 2 weeks beforehand as well so all of the above are possibilities.

    have a good trip:j

Sound stupid but my Gran swears by drinking Tonic Water, she reckons a glass a day keeps the mossies away. (not joking, she swears by it). Must admit she s never come home bitten.

Before you go consume "Marmite" foe a couple of weeks and take "Garlic" capsules.
You will get no problems with MOSSIES, we never do and swear by it.

This is great for Greece and you can use it on young children as well, you can order it from a pharmacy - it's a roll on and protects for hours - around about £7

We use this one all the time now and never ever get bitten.I have been lucky when buying it as Boots have always had some of it all on the reduced shelf.

I get eaten by mozzies.(and everything else!)

1 - the avon oh so soft is great for evenings - never got bitten while using it. Not good for the day - you burn!

2 - I always use the boots plug in things - at least one if not two to a room.

3 - the insect repellent that you can buy from Milletts and other outdoor places - cannot remember what its called but its a small white spray thing. Never been bitten by anything when i used this (my daughter also used it in Uganda with no problem). I also put this stuff on my towel to repell other little bugs - sand flies/fleas things.

If you get bitten take an anti histameine to stop the itching!

I got stung by a wasp in Skiathos when eating Marmite on toast on the balcony in Skiathos last year. Doh!
Aim to win in 2013 - a holiday somewhere nice, New York break, treats for family & friends & some cash would be lovely!!!
  • Yes the plug in things really do work. I have used them in Cuba and Egypt and have never been bitted ( and I have the meat that they like too :) ) I also use Jungle Formula extra strength and have used the Boots own make extra strength and not been bitten *touches wood*. Next year I am spending time in the Amazon where I am sure some wierd bug will hatch eggs in my skin like you see on the telly, so any recommendations would be great!

Deet is the active ingredient which repels mossies. Look at the ingredients of any repelant and you want one with a high deet %. The higher the better the protection.

We went to the Maldives in December and used a plug in for Boots and superdrug own brand spray with 50% Deet and had no probs.

Mozzie bands from Milletts - they are elastic things you wear on one arm and one ankle. Worked a treat for me in India as I have skin that reacts to repellants so could not use the creams.

BTW - Avon have that Skin So Soft range on a special offer in Campaign 8 which is the current campaign - 4 different items for £6.00 - a real bargain! (Guess who sells Avon????)
