tenency agreement renewal question

I have been renting a house for 3 years now, time as come to renew the tenancy agreement (Usually i renew it for 12 months).

This time i do not want to enter into a contract as i want to move whenever i find a suitable house (I am thinking to buy a property next year. I will be ready to start looking after April). I am ok to give a reasonable notice before moving. but my letting agent is insisting that if i want to continue to stay i have to extend it by 6 months at the end of 6 months I have to either leave or renew again.
once i start looking for the house i do not know how much time it will take me to find one and then eventually move there. I do not want the added pressure of time left on my tenancy during that process.

what do people normally do in this scenario? any advice ?

thank you

  • The agent would love you to have a new tenancy because then thay can rake in a load more fees for not doing very much.

If I were you I'd just let it run onto a periodic tenancy. Once you complete on your new purchase you can then give the required notice to your landlord. There will be a month or two when you pay rent and mortgage but better than risking having nowhere to go.

You will never get the timings to work out exactly as there are too many variables beyond your control.

can't get better advice than above but also contact your landlord , it is your legal right to have the contact details from the letting agent without giving any reason for the request , then go knock on their door and explain , If I werre the landlord then my reputation would be harmed by an agent like this .Bye Bye agent !
