paypal@e.paypal.co.uk.....phishing warning

just had the above from paypal and before clicking on it checked google to see if its was legit, others have had confirmation from paypal that it is a scam.

scary bit is that it was addressed to me using my full name.

Sometimes age just shows up all by itself ;)

In the end, it's not the years in your life

Did it look anything like this?

Subject: <your name>, your monthly activity reminder.

This is why you never click into a secure site from another site or email, always access the site directly.

I utilise a separate browser for this, only used for secure sessions.

is it a scam or not?
if you click the links in the email it takes you to the legit paypal site and the security certificate seems genuine. Im confused???

BTW I also received the email.

e.paypal.co.uk

the "e" is a subdomain of the legitimate site.
How can it be a scam?
(unless that's not the actual address it was sent from, of course)

@Jase1, I hope you wear gloves as well. Can't be too careful!
• tanglefoot, yes the subject bit with my name etc did look like that as for the detail I do not know because I did not open the email.

I did not forward it to be checked out by paypal but others did and were told by paypal it was a scam, see all the replies on google.
i have not used the account for months.

The safest way is just to ignore the email and log on to paypal directly from your browser.

That was the genuine article. I'd post the message headers too, but I'm not sure which bits of it are me-specific. :o

Indeed.
• Here's the response I got from paypal:
"Thanks for taking an active role by reporting suspicious-looking emails.
Although we've determined that the email you forwarded to us is not a
phishing attempt, our security team is grateful for your concern."

This is weird because it was asking me to confirm my bank account (again). I have already done that and have used my paypal account on a number of occasions so (a) why are they requesting this action again? (b) why are they so stupid to put a hyperlink in the email? What a gift to phishers!

The fact that the email may be addressed to you in person is no assurance. I get plenty of spam addressing me by name. These name/email combinations are collected and sold in bulk. Only if you use a user name exclusive to paypal would you know the difference
• Hey! I have an alert saying "MSE requests you give new posters a chance! Please be especially nice." Er... is there something I should know about? I mean, do you start throwing stuff when I've been on here for a while or what?

The more you post, the less likely you are to be mistaken for a spambot. ;)
• Hi everyone,

I just this moment received an email from the same domain mentioned above - ie, paypal@e.paypal.co.uk. Is the email definitely legitimate, because the one I received says that I "recently paid for something with a guest account"? I did set up an account with Paypal last year but have *never* used it or a 'guest account', and am now very concerned.
