OS Daily Tuesday 11th December

Hi, this is the Daily Thread for 11th December. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

Morning all
I've been up since 4, worrying about the changes at work & the unpleasant atmosphere, deep joy. Still nothing I can do about it, what will be will be.
Hubby & I have been invited out for a pub meal next week but had to refuse as the pub chosen is out in the sticks & I can't see to drive in the dark & if we get a taxi, then we can't afford to buy drinks, lol. Hubby is going out with friends one day next week, so at least he gets a bit of social time.
Time I fed the fish & made a cuppa.
Have a good day everyone.
Hugs Hester

  • morning everyone, Hester I am with you on the driving at night, I am finding it more and more difficult as I get older, I find the headlights very distracting and it makes for stressful driving especially when some people dont dip their headlights on approach and blind you with full beam, my social life definitely takes a dive in the winter, as getting home from work sometimes seems a challenge in itself. I understand the worries about work, I had the most awful week ever last week in my whole working life and spent the whole weekend eaten up with stress and before I knew it it was Monday and time to go back again. Sometimes I wonder how some people can just switch off, I wish I was one of them.

  • Good Morning chums and a thick white frosty one it is as well.I shall have to leave a bit earlier to go to Dds this morning for the school run as I like to make sure my windsceen is clear.yesterday i was suprised at how many folk were driving loking through a 'porthole' on their car I like to have all round vision.I think I am going to have to dig out my windscreen cover from the back of the cupboard to put on at night, saves a lot of scraping at least.
Well I went to book club yesterday which was very enjoyable as we had a few nibbles as well. This months book is Zadie Smith's The Autograph Man, After I have read it I am going to get a start on reading Hilary Mantels Wolf Hall as its been sitting on the shelf for far too long and someone gave me her 'Bring the Bodies Up' last week which is apparently the sequel to it.So that will be my Chrismas reading list over the next month.
I have two lunches out (paid for ) this week and Dinner on Friday night so not a lot of cooking to be done.I must tackle the overseas Chistmas cards today before it gets too late .A neighbour was asking me if it was true that stamps were being sold at a reduced price this year. I have never heard of this and as far as I know they still cost a kings ransome I know mine did when I bought 2 dozen a few weeks ago Anyone else heard of stamps being reduced in price ?
Right time to get the coffee perking and the porridge pot on (bit of inside tummy central heating in the icy weather )Keep wrapped up warm chums and mind your step in the frosty pavements
    Cheers JackieO xxx

I got some stamps at a reduced price. You have to be eligible for the offer by being in receipt of Employment Support Allowance or Incapacity Benefit.

Hugs to you Hester and Going4thedream - I too spend large parts of the nights worrying. I always light a candle as it seems to cut through the darkness xx
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
  • Good morning all,
Frosty start to the morning. We had snow for a short time last night.
My car goes for an mot today. I am hoping and praying that if it does need work it isn't too much. My insurance is due on the 21st and hubbys tax is at the end of the month. Just pleased we have got all of the Christmas presents sorted and paid for.
Hester, hope you have a better day at work. Just not a nice place to be when it's unpleasant.
Wm is on so the clothes will be put on the airer before i go to work.
No idea what is for tea. Now off for a rummage in the freezer.
I hope everyone has a good day and hugs to those who need them.

    Morning all,
Lots of decorations put up y/day my plan today is to do the trees and write out cards, we received 6 xmas cards y/day and 5 of them hadn't been franked, what are the odds of that? so I've cut them off and will glue them on to the ones I'm sending.

DH went to get some veg y/day and came back with 3 large joints of beef and a leg of pork for about £13, I cooked 2 beef joints very slowly but they are so tough, think I'll have to dice them and make a casserole in the sc and mince some and make burgers.

I've finished the shoe boxes for the Woman's refuge, 1 for a girl and 1 for a boy so they have to be dropped off a the church.

I have read through but nothing seems to have sunk in, not helped by having the start of a cold, feeling wooly headed.
Wishing you all a happy day.

    Morning everyone

Hugs to those that need/want them that are having a hard/sad time at the moment x

Getting light here now this morning, looks very frosty but no snow - forecast said we "may" get some in the early hours - looks like we've been lucky not to get some. DH up and off to work stupid early.

Dinner last night was smoked sausage pasta, tonight we will be having LO's from Sunday's roast.

Boys school is still shut - rumour is a mains water pipe has burst and caused a major flood - so don't know when they will be back to school.

Work was busy but not horrendously - so will see what today brings.

Now going to get ready to go to work as going to drop the boys over to mum's (out of my way) and will then need to collect them later.

Have a great day everyone, stay safe and well x

  • Good morning everyone :)

Am getting ready for my dreaded hospital appointment so am prepared for a fight with my consultant. I need to get in the shower then DH needs to mark me all over with a skin pen, this would be ok except I have to go straight to work afterwards!

Our Oxfam bins in the local supermarket are constantly emptied and/or vandalised by people who are nothing to do with Oxfam, so sadly that is not an option but am going to try and get there tonight.

Left over Thai mince from last night in an omelette tonight. Need to find something for sandwiches as work has no microwave working for soup.

Have just noticed there is a steam mop thread on main OS board so need to check that out.

Well wishes for all sick people and pets and hugs for those who need or just want them. Keep safe and warm and have a super day :)

The discount stamps are available to those on ESA, Incapacity Benefit or Pension Credit, you can buy up to 36 at the 2011 prices and you have to take your DWP letter stating that you are in receipt of any of those benefits.

Re driving in the dark, I have driving glasses that have an anti-reflective coating on, so the glare from headlights isn't such a problem. Maybe that might help some people (although I'm not sure whether they would be of any benefit to your eye condition HH).

No OS today - although I have dishes to be done before work - as am off to DS2's Masters graduation in London tomorrow with DH (and my ex.... am not looking forward to this as we haven't spoken for around 10 years :o) so it's train & hotel tonight, lunch out with DH tomorrow, tea with DS in Kensington and then a long drive home to the Lancashire coastal resort. Hope I haven't got much to do in work on Thursday!

Tree going up on Thursday (DH's job), all Christmas cards written & mailed, puddings made, cakes made & fed weekly. Will ice them on Thursday night while DH is out at his annual Quo concert.

Monnogran, hope you can find a stand-in Florence - would any of the Rev's parishioners oblige to Rev-sit while you get on with your chores?

Lamewolf & Molly41 - hope you are both feeling a bit brighter

Have a good day all
