  • Tins are much cheaper so if they're not already used to sachets / fussy I'd try to go with them.

Try the Pets board for suggestions - not sure if this offer is still on but might be worth popping in if you've got one near you:

I agree tins are much cheaper, sachets are more convenience for some owners especially when you only have one cat. You might be able to buy packs of tins at some larger stores, or maybe even online. I use sachets but buy in large packs when on offer so sometime I have a few packs and sometime not when offers are few

Dry food works out cheaper than tins, but there can be health implications.

I have 4 cats and buy tins by the case (24) from Pets At Home. There's usually a 10% off code knocking around on the boards somewhere and if you order over £29 deliver is free.

Is your friend going to keep the kittens? The cost of neutering is going to
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D
  • Thare are new much cheaper vets opened round the country now known as neutering centres I believe another I know if easy pets. A male is about £20 IIRC. Macro often do classic which is a better one of the tinned meats for £7 +VAT for 24 tins. By shopping round I can normally gets tins for about 40p. Also theres printable vouchers laways knocking about for James Wellbeloved. There is a pet board on here with really friendly members. I fostered 2 last Christmas whom never made it to new homes. Actually they hardly make it off my sofa!
Mad Mum to 3 wonderful children, 2 foster kittens and 2 big fat cats that never made it to a new home!

Now I have three cats I use tins rather than sachets. A tin holds the equivelent of four sachets and costs about 55-60p against four sachets for around £1 for brand name. Supermarket own brands are cheaper and if you see Butchers Classic cat food in tins try that, it's as good as the premium brands in terms of nutrition but usually £2.75 or so for six tins in Asda or 2x6 for £5.00

  • I do hope she's got them ALL neutered or this could become an unqualified disaster in the next couple of months. If she's receiving benefit, the Cats Protection League may be able to assist with the cost, which could take it down to free/£5 for males, slightly more for females.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

I get dried food for my cats (15yrs) from eBay. Excellent.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.
  • I supplement tinned food with dry cat food from Lidl's which is only 99p/kg and the cat loves it.

I just have to say this first......

I hope that your friend will get her cat neutered as soon as possible. If she is struggling financially I know the Blue Cross and Cat's Protection League can help. A female cat can go back into heat before her litter is weaned. She can continue to have litter after litter after litter with just as many kittens, if not more each time.

There is an ongoing argument as to whether kittens need special kitten food. Kitten food supposedly contains more nutrients. However, remember if your friend does feed them adult food that their mouths are only tiny as are their teeth. Big pellets could be problematic.
