Have you checked out ebay? People like Paul Mckenna have hypno cds for different, though common, symptoms. You have not said why you are after hypnotherapy but maybe there is a cd that could help? For less than a tenner its worth a go and you can always resell the cd afterwards!
  • I'm in Suffolk, Skyrocket. I've not been able to get any recommendations yet, but I'm keeping on asking around. Unfortunately, this isn't the sort of place where you find that many therapists.

I thoroughly agree with you about these 'crash' courses, it's very worrying that you can almost buy your qualifications without putting in enough time. I think it's probably fair to say that most of the people taking these courses don't really understand that though. My DH has been looking into plumbing courses and you can become a plumber virtually overnight. The further you look into it though, the more you find out what sort of a rip off these quickie courses really are.

Not an expert on this sort of thing but my experience is that if you have a positive attitude then it is more likely to work, it also helps if the cost is "reassuringly expensive" - you don't get owt for nowt.

I tried it about 13 yrs ago. I lost my father at a young age and had no recolllection of events prior to his death, I suppose blocked it out as it was all too upsetting to remember him.
Then as I got older, I found I wanted to remember my times with him, and I gave it a go.

I went to someone who was recommended, it certainly wasn't £70 a go, more like £20, but that was a while ago! The lady was lovely, explained it was nothing to be scared of and I was to take the sessions one at a time, I may have needed 1 session or perhaps 3-4 everyone is different.

She also explained that the hypnosis was just a heightened sense of awareness, and if for example there were smoke somewhere in the building whilst I was 'under' I'd be the first one out the door!!

Anyway as it turned out I had one session. It wasn't a magic button, but really rather strange....I'd be talking to someone about any sort of topic, and suddenly I'd remember something about my father doing/saying the same sort of thing and hey presto I'd remember things.

This still happens 13 years later... so something worked. Good luck!

Benny i too lost my father at a very young age (2 yrs old) I was very interested to read your post, if you dont mind me asking how old where you when you lost your father? as i like you dont have any memories of my father and would very much like to remember some things, however i do fear that i may have been to young for this to work for me, please feel free to pm me if you prefer, thanks Jane

A positive attitude a;ways helps but I can't agree with you that you get better therapy the more you pay.
I know plenty of rubbish therapists who charge a fortune and they get away with it because people believe they will get more for their money. These therapists arent very good and their scruples are somewhat lacking as they view clients that will cough up like this as fair game.
Conversely I know lots of excellent therapists who don't believe in ripping off their clients (I am one! ;)) and treat their clients with the respect they deserve.

My DH had hypnotherapy a couple of years ago.
I think he went for 1 session over a period of a few months, he was also given a cd with the hypnotherapists voice talking you into a deep state of relaxtion which worked for him.
He suffers with IBS and can get a bit anxious about things from time to time and when he feels like that he goes upstairs and listens to his cd and comes downstairs chilled out.
If everyone cared and nobody cried, if everyone loved and nobody lied, if everyone shared and swallowed their pride then we'd see the day when nobody died.

I was referred for hypnotherapy by my GP a number of years ago - an assortment of reasons: depression, anxiety, irritable bowel, insomnia (my ex had left me totally unexpectedly and I had two children under three - I was a wreck!). So got it on the NHS at no cost.

Best thing ever and I still use the techniques now. I was very cynical at the time and thought it was a stupid idea - but it worked. Looking back, at times I was really rude because I just wasn't on board. It took a while to work but I have never had sleep problems since. In fact, I got to the stage that I fell asleep as soon as I got into bed (mmm - maybe that's why I was single for so long!) My IBS became much more controllable and really the hypnotherapy helped me get my life back together. 14 years on I still have the places "I go" - the beach for peace, the woods for strength etc. If I'm doing a presentation, or a difficult conflict situation etc, I call on the tools.

My therapist did say that she didn't do stop smoking stuff as hypnotherapy didn't work unless the person wanted help, and most smokers don't. she had great success with over eating, and turned many of my friends off chocolate! Maybe I was lucky with the therapist, but it really worked for the old cynical me!

    Good luck!
