That was my own opinion that I woukld rather have a decent brand than something unknown, although what do I know?
I've had a f&h in the past and they should have been really crap -but it wasn't!
I've also had Skodas and have a VW now........
If you're sure the products good enough for you then that's great.
Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.
If you don't like my opinion feel free to respond with your own.

Skoda and VW (along with Audi, Seat, Porsche, Bentley etc) are all different brands of Volkswagon AG so possibly not the best example but does go to prove that peoples perception of brands etc can be misguided

InsideInsurance - haven't really heard of 2K, but I think 4K has been dubbed 'SuperHD' and 8K 'UltraHD' which I would say are beyond the current HD. Lots of people want to go straight to 8K, but industry thinks they won't be ready for people wanting to upgrade TVs. 4K is an amazing jump in definition over 1080p anyway so I guess the geeks will do it!

In the bedroom, I have an M&S (Cello) 39" LCD which I bought in a recent sale, directly connected to a Freeview HD receiver. HD picture quality is as good as anything else on the market; SD is reliant on the scaler in the STB itself; admittedly the built-in tuner's performance is pretty poor but in context this really matters little.

Stick it next to a pioneer kuro or a recent panasonic plasma, or even a mid-to-upper-end samsung LED, and the contrast of the cello will likely leave a lot to desire, especially on more challenging, contrast heavy films/programs.

I agree that the performance jump is less noticable when everything is running 1080p, but there still is a difference. Some TVs look quite flat, others have a wonderful depth and colour range, so the TVs quality still makes a difference, even if you are viewing a 1080p source, and from my experience of dealing with Cello TVs, I'd be surprised to see one that's anything better than mediocre at best.

Yes, I probably should have qualified that comment (referring to the general class rather than "anything on the market"). Plasma and newer LED-backlit sets do offer a superior picture, especially at the higher end. However your bog-standard "Sony because it has to be a Sony" £300 TV will be little better than a budget set, indeed in some cases the panel is identical.

I have been surprised by this particular Cello set. I've seen older ones that were pretty marginal, but this one seems significantly better.

In GENERAL the Cello (and the like) set will have the panel that Sony (and the like) were using a few years ago. So if you compare a 3 yr old Sony against a brand new Cello, that may give the impression they're the same.
