it is claimed,
"3.5 million hotspots throughout the UK and Ireland."
"Fon has over seven million Fon Spots across the globe."

Apparently, all you need is to purchase device called Fontera SIMPL 39€/$49 and share your wifi connection.

"With Fon, you can make money from your WiFi connection.
If a paying user accesses WiFi at your Fon Spot.."

Has anyone tried this?
Is it only for BT customers or could someone like me with TalkTalk use it?

Thanks

I am a BT customer and use Fon hotspots to bolster my data allowance.

BT Broadband customers get 10000 minutes a month of Wifi hotspot usage in addition to their Gigabyte data allowance.

The speed is lower than my home connection, but still very usable.

When you sign up, you agree to host other customers on your home network, but I'm not aware of any payment for doing so.

My telephone and BB is with TalkTalk.

Info on getting paid for sharing is at

May be it is only for customers of Fon who purchase a gizmo from them and share wi-fi!

You get a sign-on page where you can give either a BT logon, a FON logon, or pay for time. As long as you pay, I'd guess anyone can use it.

Seems to be. I think if you lived somewhere where lots of people were looking for wifi it might be worth it. But the fact they don't tell you how much the return is makes me suspect it may be tiny.

    Found the answer here

"Anyone with a broadband connection can join Fon. Just buy a Fonera and connect it to your ADSL/broadband, or activate Fon through one of our partners. Once your Fon Spot has been connected and registered, you're ready to enjoy all the benefits Fon has to offer! "

One off payment of 39€/$49 and wi-fi at millions of hotspots around the world sounds good.
With VoIP account phone calls would be cheap too.

Has anyone tried this Fonera gizmo ?
Having had and read so many complaints about free 3G by Sambamobile, this could be another option. Albeit, coverage in the UK is unlikely to be as good as with 3G.

I got a free Fon years ago before BT got involved with them, was real handy in AU, Singapore, HK & Europe using other peoples wifi while people are using mine while I am away when I reactivate it, which means time away from home is not a waste of a monthly broadbnad fee ! ;)
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)

    Thanks for the reply :)
Router by BT that allow sharing appear to have led to a dramatic increase in the number of hotspots in the UK.
Although I live few miles from the town centre; can right now see three BT Fon hotspots as available to connect. About an year ago there were none!

I note that you had your BB subscription going whilst you went abroad. Did you also leave the router on?

Yes my Orange Broadband with the original Fon which was given away free when Fon started.

I only activated Fon when I was away as to use other Fon users abroad as far too many students with posh accents round my neck of the woods have nice cars and mummy and daddies who visit & buy clothing and stock them up but they still like to steal broadband Fon-esque "full time" ! So I'm a part time Fon'er lol
