    I have come across some large companies who almost always defend claims, even where their defence is fairly hopeless. They might do this if they don't need to hire solicitors because they have a decent local in-house legal team. They also might do it where the company's internal procedures make it very difficult to pay-out unless there is a court order.

    Local authorities are a bad culprit. I can understand the desire not to pay out given the concern with compensation culture, but I have seen it result in councils throwing away legal costs on defending the most cut-and-dry personal injury claims.

    It really depends on who you are dealing with. I imagine Tesco would be keen to settle things but who knows.
