Fitting a shower from scratch

I bought a new shower that needs fitting. The bathroom has never had a shower before so I assume it needs everything doing from scratch.

That said, can I just confirm that I need:

  • A plumber to do the required plumbing work (whatever that may be), if so what will he be doing and how much should I paying (including any required parts)?
  • An electrician to do the required electrical work (whatever that may be), if so what will he be doing and how much should I paying (including any required parts)?

So I just need some advice on:

- what needs doing
- what parts are required
- cost of items/parts
- cost of labour

Incidentally, if anyone knows of a local plumber/electrician (Peterlee, Durham area) to do the job, please let me know.

    Assuming you've bought an electric shower;

You'll need a dedicated cable from the consumer unit, a dedicated breaker in the consumer unit, a switch (either ceiling-mounted pull switch in the bathroom, or wall-mounted outside the room, and cable from the switch to the shower.

The cost of this will depend on - whether or not you have a spare slot in the cons unit, how far away the bathroom is from the cons unit, how easily the sparkie can run the cable between the two, how easy the cable run is from the switch to the shower location, what your walls are made of, etc etc

Parts needed - Cable, Cable Clips, Switch, Breaker, and (if the cons unit is full), secondary consumer unit or replacement of existing, plus anything required in making good walls and/or ceilings after fitting - plasterboard, plaster, paint, etc.

An electric shower needs a cold water mains pressure feed. The cost of this will depend on where the nearest accessible point is to access your mains water supply, how far that is from where the shower will be, and again, what wall construction you have, etc.

Parts needed; Piping, Joints, Isolator Valve, Pipe Clips, plus anything needed to make good walls and ceilings

Hi Abu....a specialist did mine (Plumber/Tiler), and he contracted out the connection to a qualified electrcian. There was a cable there already direct to the consumer unit.
Aug 2009 price all in , shower unit, base and sliding panels and associated plumbing and tiling...£1730.
Got him from the classified papers, no problems since.

It would help if you supplied the make and model of the electric shower that you have already bought.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

So you'll need a circuit breaker of 45A. For your own safety please ensure that you have RCD protection on this circuit.

I just need the shower plumbing in, then attaching to the wall. Then the electrical connection and switch, etc so I cant see it being that much.

I live in a small bungalow with the bolier being in the kitchen next door to the bathroom and the electric fuse box being close again in the second bedroom.

If there's never been a shower in there before, won't you need some form of shower screen/curtain, and some tiling on the wall?

yes I have been using one of those mixer shower sets from Argos and used a holder for the shower head. And put up an extendable shower pole with curtain. I tiled the wall a few weeks ago, although recently found out that I will need to remove some tiles for the shower plumbing and electrical work.

  • they could install the plumbing & electrics on the surface of the tiles although it won't look very nice
