There must be thousands if not milllions of students who would love to be able to store icecubes or icecream in their bedrooms.

    Any suggestion?

Maybe they had enough common sense to put a fridge/freezer in their bedroom.
I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.

Exactly what point are you trying to make?

I would think the point is rather obvious if they want to store ice in their bedroom then they would have a freezer in there.
I store frozen produce in the kitchen and that is why I have the freezer in there.

Back on topic surely you have a far more practical space to have a freezer.

Jeez, this topic is still going. As for student, they would simply think, what is more to worry about in life, a freezer or living, then would go buy a small desktop freezer, put it in there room and make some ice.

    Hi

What is the smallest (i.e shortest) freezer that money can buy?
As opposed to the smallest freezer that money can't buy? Or maybe the smallest freezer that is free?
Sorry OP - it just read funny :)

Sorry I'm afraid that I have no idea what subtle or otherwise points you folks are trying to make.

My point about students is pretty straightforward which is this: That if you are a student particularly if you are living in a college or hall of residence - or if you have 4+ of you living in a small house, you are quite likely to be very very VERY short on space. And the only place you have to put anything might well be your bedroom. You might just be sick and tired of having your flatmates steal your food. Or you might just want a bit of ice available at arm's length to go with your drink... Or you might just want to cool down a few beers as fast as possible on a regular basis. For all these people if storage is to be in the bedroom then storage volume will be at an absolute premium for these people.

So I would have thought a really compact little freezer - possibly to make some ice - possibly to freeze some ready made meals would be brilliant, particularly if they also had invested in a nice little microwave.

And clearly it's not JUST students that are short on space. Yachts, transatlantic rowers, caravans, lorry cabins, camping of all sorts... might all quite like a to have a bit of ice available without needing to invest in a bloody great big box with about 40-50cm tall.

So in this day and age of high tech gadgets of all sorts to... trim your nasal hair and open tin cans to the sound of Homer Simpson, know what time the tide is, peel & crush garlic with one hand, recharge your iphone by sunlight, dehumidify re-humidify and ionise your room and press your trousers...

...I feel genuinely surprised that nobody seems to have built a really compact, thin-walled (and yes, high temperature gradient) freezer for any of these market sectores. Or at least if they have I cant find it on Google.

    Yes, I am serious.

If you are that serious, so spend all tens of thousands on developing a freezer that an then more money on marketing it to the big companies.

Small house for students is easy, someone came up with the idea of a modular fridge / freezer, ideal for students.

    http://core77.com/blog/object_culture/modular_refrigerator_for_student_houses__11090.asp

As for bit of ice, thats easy, fill those bags with water, pop into freezer and once freezer, place in ice bucket and put into bedroom, and pop beer into bucket for cold beer.

As for camping or trucks, there is a portable freezer that runs of the 12 v system. Yeah and transatlantic rowers are really going to want a freezer for there ready meals which they then pop into there microwave.

Simple fact is, the condesing unit of the freezer would take up more space than what your asking for. Even if they made one, the niche market would be so small, cost 10 times more than a bog standard freezer.

No. I am serious about saving money not developing a business idea. If I wanted to start a business I would be on a different forum. !!!!!!?

    Looks great but
    A) it's not a freezer it's a fridge
    B) It's not commercially available
    !!!!!!?

Are you serious? A bucket of water!
So what happens when someone knocks it over...
When you dont want the inconvenience of running back to the freeze ever couple of days
When you already live in cold damp conditions and dont want them to get colder and damper
    !!!!!!?

Serious about saving money yet are willing to spend 10 times more than a bog standard freezer? Strange....just get yourself a chest freezer and find a corner for it. Put stuff on it when not in use. Use it as a table..do something with it. 12V freezers are about 44cm high and open from the top which isn't any use for you. They also run on gas and use 8.6kWh of gas every 24 hours. Hardly saving money.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
