Do school these days actually teach the child how to write on paper with a pen? I wonder when the excuse will be my dog ate my ipad:rotfl:0

I'd rather a Kindle or similar device to stop the lugging around of textbooks and to allow easier reading in their own time, but not a ipad!
Yes, I use tablets as part of my teaching methods (I'm a private tutor) but it is usually for books or apps that allow development of hand-eye co-ordination, reading books, using apps as rewards (tailored to the child, one is learning the piano so we use a piano app) and the aural identification of phonics and using the touch screen to develop fine motor skills for writing.
You can run the Kindle app on the iPad - I've stopped using my Kindle since we got the iPad for DS2.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

My husband just got an iPad from work (already has a laptop) and other than a bigger screen for typing docs and being marginally less heavy than his laptop I can't see what the fuss is about. It doesn't seem to do anything extra that my BlackBerry won't do if used to full extent with apps.
Schools round here give kids laptops. Not sure if parents have to pay or not.
Handwriting along with spelling and grammar went to pot years before iPads !
Can you make up a presentation and show it on an interactive whiteboard using your blackberry? It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0
