Tiling bathroom ceiling

I'm going to go against the flow a little here. I successfully tiled a ceiling area above a shower about 2½ years ago and as I haven't had any complaints then its reasonable to assume that they are still there and nobody ended up in A&E. Although I should qualify this by saying it was against my better judgement in the first instance but the client insisted thats what he wanted.

But as has been said - prep is absolutely the key. A light ceramic should be OK. Don't even consider natural stone though.

As to the price its too cheap tbh. Its a "bang 'em up, take the money and run away and hope they don't come down again" price.

    Cheers

OK so tiling is a bad idea. PVC cladding the way to go, so you all say. Fair enough. So, how much to stick PVC cladding up then? (assuming that's the best alternative). I guess the materials will be cheap...
  • mine & diy's point was that not only is it not a good idea for all the reasons others have listed, it will look pants, ask yourself how many bathrooms have you been in that have wall tiles on the ceiling ? i bet not one & there is a good reason for that, horses for courses & no one tiles a ceiling, tbh i would up grade your extractor fan & get one with a timer that carries on for 15 mins after you have used the bath/shower, also the kind of light bulb you use or different coloured things in the bathroom will effect the colour the ceiling looks, a really good example is the sky it's not really blue it's the light reflecting off the water that gives it that colour.

Your point is moot. I don't feel strongly about tiles, I just want the ceiling waterproofed. Ever heard of a wet room? Having had know-it-all "tradesmen" around here with a brief to improve extraction but who did F.A, I'm now just concentrating on making the whole room moisture proof. There are no windows nor access to exterior wall. Other than the ceiling there's no aesthetic or functional problems with it. And I don't know what you're talking about re the lights... it's the paint. Paint yellows and bubbles when it's wet. Other materials don't. Can somebody please answer the question: how much to PVC it?

Go into a tile retailer or DIY store. You'll find wall tiles, you'll find floor tiles, I don't think you'll find any of them referred to as 'ceiling tiles'. Wonder why.....?

Slow clap. Yawn. I just asked for a quote on PVC. Anybody up for giving me that or still hoohahing about tiles? Christ any opportunity for you to feel all clever eh... guess it doesn't come up often for you.
  • as googler said above

yes of course i've heard of & fitted wet rooms & they don't have tiled ceilings either, like I & a number of others have said upgrade your extractor to get rid of the moisture (although you don't seem to want to take that advise from us know it all tradesmen), get some decent paint designed for the job, if you really want cladding then go & have a look at the price of it or do you want us to do that for you as well ??

No, I got tradesmen round with a brief to improve extraction, paid them a grand and guess what? It's all the same again... same issues, same peeling paint, etc etc. Why should I pay another cockney geezer another grand to sort it out?

Funny how I ask in here and all I get are people banging on about how stupid the tiles idea is... well I concede, fine, yeah, stupid idea, but I'm not a tradesman... then I ask for a PVC quote seeing as, er... this is "is this quote fair" forum, yet you tell me to google it, and are still banging on about how stupid I am re tiles... jeez, can't all be as incredibly intelligent as you lot... :T

I'm just an honest consumer who has had it with shelling out thousands just for one !!!!ing bathroom, only to have cockney know it alls rip me off
  • i agree that is a very very poor job with regard to the pipe & i don't think i would have paid anything for that let alone what you paid, the ceiling could be damp but it also could be the paint reacting with whatever is under it, was the paint (damaged area's scraped back) before the new paint was applied ? some ceilings contain distemper & this can cause the ceiling probs you have, i think the ceiling needs priming (not pva though) before it's repainted (if thats the way you decide to go)
