Is it possible to get any Italian or French speaking channels on Freeview? We don't have a satellite dish and don't really want to invest in the expense of installing one. I don't know whether this depends on proximity to a specific transmitter. Thanks.

No, you will need a sat dish aligned to one of the European satellites.
There are English-speaking French and Russian channels on Freesat, but not native-speaking.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
There are no French or Italian channels on Freeview.
If you live on the South coast, then you might, just, be able to pick up French TV if you point the aerial at a French transmitter, and if your receiver is compatible with the French broadcasts. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0
