Best Firelighters

Damned expensive but I still reckon it's the only sensible long term answer - a Grenadier electric firelighter. Works on bonfires, too.0

Long term? I'm not going to live long enough for that!
Anyway, it won't work 200m away from the house for bonfires.
I think a £3.50 investment in a new canister for my Weed Wand would be worth it though. Doesn't do a damn bit of good with weeds, but it lights bonfires and barbeques.0 -

Totally agree - there were posts on this firelighter in another thread.
It is also excellent for lighting barbeques and bringing a 'dead' fire back to life.
I have two of them, the one I am currently using belonged to an elderly relative who bought it in 1962 - then called a Best Matchless Firelighter. IIRC it cost about £5.
A friend who wasn't prepared to pay the £100 or so, uses an electric paint stripper - like this, but cheaper

Incidentally I have seen used Grenadier firelighters on Ebay. Two on at the moment - one a silly price0 -
eBay prices can be extremely strange. I saw a paraffin stove that would normally sell for around £35-40 sell for about £120 last week.0

Try the bark off a silver birch tree - when it is peeling off naturally. When you pull it off pull down rather than around the tree so you don't damage the tree. It lights really easily, you can even light it with a flint and steel the bushcraft way if you cut it up. Wrap it roung a few twigs and it will perform as well as any bought firelighter.
We also make paper logs as fuel-example on here
