Do android apps work abroad?

Okay, please be gentle- I'm a technophobe!

I have bought my kids a samsung galaxy tab, nexus 7 and a galaxy s mp3. I think these all run on our wifi. My question is this, will the apps that they have already downloaded play when we go on holiday abroad? These devices have only ever been used at home so I have no idea how they work.

Thank you for your help- i know that these are probably stupid questions but I honestly don't know.

What kind of apps are we talking about here ?

You can still play games etc on them but for those that require internet access eg google maps wont work unless you have a means to access the internet.

I'm only thinking about games like angry birds, temple run- kids games- that sort of thing. The ones that we have paid for and downloaded. The thinking was, that these devices would replace our nintendo ds iyswim?

When I'm logged into Facebook it's an HTTPS session so it's secure the same as using a bank or shopping site so what's the difference?

You can still play games etc on them but for those that require internet access eg google maps wont work as no access to internet is available unless you cache the maps.

I think you want to explain your answer as you are suggesting that 'those that require internet access' just won't work which of course isn't true. Believe it or not, the UK is not the only country with internet access... Yes. you mentioned google maps as an example but it's the way you wrote the post.

Some games may want to go online to check a license or similar, the quickest and most definite way to check is simply disable the wifi (and the cellular 3G radio if the Tab has it) and see if the work ok at home first.
