when you have finished open messenger, click on "options" and then "File Transfer" and then tick the box that says "scan For viruses with"
then in the box below put
"C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgw.exe /SE"
include the " at each endEx forum ambassador

hi browntoa, thank you so much for your help. so far, I have been able to delete the 7,000 plus copies of pics, now i'm running avg anti-spyware, adaware is now clear as well.
I looked in options in messenger but i can't see a 'file transfer option'.Shanni0 -
how are you running them in "safe mode" while connected to the internet and posting on here ??
I'm quoting windows Live Messenger 8...for those locations, might be somewhere else if an earlier versionEx forum ambassador

hooray...I think I'm clear now, thank you browntoa...you're fab!! Virtual hug to you! Phew...what a horrible feeling, I've never had a virus before and I have avg's and adaware and firewall...how do they get in? I hardly browse much either. It was certainly triggered when I attempted to send pictures, so maybe something was lying dormant? How do I know it's definitely gone?
thanks again for your time and patience!Shanni0 -
if it's gone the scans should come back clear now
to be sure you could post a hijackthis log for me to check

Also, make sure that you actually extract HijackThis to its own folder. DO NOT run it from within a zip manager (Winzip), as no backups will be savedEx forum ambassador

shanni,
a) is your computer security setup as comprehensive as it should be? See this post I made in another thread
b) are you browsing safely? Do you scan every e-mail attachment before you download them and scan everything you download before trying to run/open the file you downloaded? Do you scan with an anti-virus program and also an anti-trojan program? The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.0 -
I have avg-antivirus, avg-anti-spyware, ad-aware and zone alarm (all free ones). My avg anti-virus is scheduled to run daily each evening and I run the other 2 at least once a day. The emails are checked by the avg. I don't think I have an anti-trojan programme, is there a free one?Shanni0
