Please can someone help me with switching from cable modem to wireless? Virgin

Really frustrated with virgin, i was chatting to my BIL about wanting wi-fi in the house for the kids to connect to (hoping to get some tablets for xmas)
He said to ring up virgin who should swap my old cabled modem for a wireless one.
However just phoned them and they are saying i either have to pay an extra £4 a month to upgrade my broadbrand or buy it at a cost of £75!
So does this mean i am stuck with cable with no chance of getting wireless?
Not sure if this is better in the tech section?
TIA

Did you tell VM that you are 'thinking of leaving' if you can't go wireless?
You can simply buy yourself a wireless router (not an ADSL modem/router) suitable for a cable service and install that downstream of your cable modem.
Plenty secondhand on ebay for about a tenner upwards.
Don't replace the VM modem itself, as that is their property.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Try asking on Cable Forum They have VM staff as members but are independent of Virgin.

If Virgin won't play ball just buy yourself a cable wireless router.

    e.g.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-WR841N-300Mbs-Wireless-Router/dp/B001FWYGJS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354890252&sr=8-1

Only quoting the tax avoiding Amazon site, cos its easy, other retail outlets are available:rotfl:

I've just checked the back of my modem and i have no spare ports at all-power supply, ethernet and the cable. Doesn't the wireless router need to plug into the modem?

The other end of the ethernet cable should go into the router.

The sequence is cable modem>wireless router>laptop. Simples!

What package are you on? As after the double speed you may qualify for a superhub, mine was large at 10mb/s, since the double speed, it required the superhub to get full advantage, which was recieved this week.
Before that I used a Belkin type G router connected to the standard motorola modem, worked a treat.
