It's not exactly a scam, but they make don't make it easy for you to spot what they are doing. They continue to choose to operate in this way because it makes them lots of money.
The hallmark of a disreputable company.

Like many other been ripped of by this organisation, I read many replies saying you couldn`t block a Pay Pal payment, however you can see whether Forces Re-united have set up a regular payment scheme by watching a You Tube video ( search "stopping Pay Pal payments)

    Just an update,
After being conned for a £4.95 yearly subscription which gave me no access to the search facilty, I asked FR within 1 day to refund the money and cancel the subscription
They closed the account with no refund
  • I sent this to Forces War Records:

    "Forces War record"
"Thanks for taking money from my credit card without Authorization.

The original “come-on” was “download forces war record for 99p
After 10 days you would lose database access, if not renewed.

I did not agree to any TERMS to continue.
By default a profile was set up which included “auto renew my subscription” box.
By default this box was ticked.
Cash sums were illegally removed from my credit card.

I feel that I must warn other people of this Scam, especially Old Age Pensioners who try to find out about their war friends.
Unless you are street wise you will lose over £100 per year every year."

They make up your profile after giving them 99p for 1 download using a credit card.
Some time later you get a email saying your access will stop after 10days.
By default a box is ticked by them to say "automatic renew membership"
nearly £10 pounds is taken from your credit card every month.
By this time you have forgotten all about the site and think it's been cancelled.

I November I received an invitation to join FWR for an annual fee of £10. I joined and within minutes, I received a confirmation email to say that I had FULL Membership for one year
Within 5 minutes I used the "Search" box to find out information on my family. A list apeared, but I was unable to access because a pop up box demanded another subscription - What I already had just paid £10

I telephoned FWR to be told the "Search" box took me to another one of their sites, which had nothing to do with my subscription, basically they operate two independant sites
But why wasn`t this made clear by ther "Search" box that you would be taken to an external site where additional charges my be required ?
I requested a refund of the payement I had just made ( only 15 mins had past by this time from my application) but this was not forthcoming.
I subsequently lodged a complaint with the ASA and today they have informed me my complaint was justified and this was going to lead into a full investigation. They consider my initial email invitation from FWR was possibly misleading
Watch this space, results of this adjudication will be posted on the ASA web site ( together with another FWR reprimand)
  • I thought i had lost the plot until I found this thread. FWR are still employing this scam . I paid what I was quite sure was a one off payment in the Summer of 2014. How I missed the payments going through on my card until Jan 2015 I have no idea. I am quite sure I had not ticked a box for monthly subscription. I find the "helpful" comments on this thread presumably from people linked to FWR quite cynical. If so many people are being signed up inadvertently to these subscriptions there is something purposely wrong with the website. They have rebuffed my request for reimbursement but I will be contacting them again now I know I am not alone. My advice would be to leave this website well alone.

Recently I received this email from Forces Reunited:
    Dear XXXXX,
It has been more than a year since your last visit to Forces Reunited and we wondered if you have mislaid your account details. If so, here is a reminder for you.

    Username:XXXXX@XX.com
    Password:XXXXXXX

(I replaced my details in this post but they were sent in clear by Forces Reunited.)

    This horrified me ...

This is shocking. A password should never be stored in plain text, let alone emailed. If the security is still performed in this way, people need to assume their credit card details are at risk.

For anyone affected, I'd recommend reporting to the information commissioners office

Thanks for the feedback. Always good to hear that type of thing.

I have searched the ASA's website and cannot find the ruling.

Here is their list of rulings for 18 Feb 2015:
Sorry, but I cannot see anything there about Forces War Records.
    What am I doing wrong?

Under the informally resolved case there is the following...
Clever Digit Media Ltd t/a Forces Reunited

    Could that be them?
