I've been mulling over buying a road bike ( as i have both a hybrid and a MTB ) for a long time and was thinking of splashing the cash in the sales for one
Budget will be approx 5-600 but would prefer to spend a less if possible , so any suggestions / recommendations etc..

You'll get a different suggestion from every person who posts, there are hundreds to choose from and it all depends when, where and why you want it.
If you can track down a Genesis Equilibrium in the sales it'd be a great buy.

If not then a Genesis Aether 20 (older model) alloy frame not the steel of the Equilibrium but a bike you'll want to spend all day riding they are that good.
http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/product/36397/Genesis_Aether_20_Bike_2011 is a real bargain with Tiagra fitted
Neither are a common sight on the road, but the company is British and they are designed for UK roads and riding.0 -
Halfords do their own range. I would go to an ebay shop myself. Things were a lot easier when you could pop down to the local council tip & pay a few quid for a bike & spares. Why not look in your local paper & supermarkets (postcard advertising).:j0

I'd put another couple of hundred quid to it and get one of these-http://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/bikes/cross/croix-de-fer/cdf.
You be able to go anywhere and do anything on one of these, wether your going to work, going for a ride in the woods or going on a tour around the U.K.
I'd always be looking at a cross bike as there more robust for the British Roads and Weather. Last thing you want is to be let down by some flimsy road bike.0 -
On the basis this is a moneysaving site try this one for £300 which has had fantastic reviews :

I'd recommend this or the croix de fer especially if you can benefit from the CtW scheme. If not, the 2012 bikes will be hitting the sales now.Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.0 -
There some very good suggestions thank you all.
JQ. i have read some very good reports on the Triban 3 ( considering the price of it ) , also the genesis looks like a very good bike for the money
Good idea paper / supermarket, i was also thinking about putting a notice up at the local uni to see if there was any poor student selling his bike
However the main problem will be ( when i decided which one to get ) how to slip the bike into the garage so the gaffer doesnt know ive aquired anotherR.I.P Sam, still in my heart0 -
I got a Specialized Allez earlier in the year as my first road bike - have had no issues at all and find it a joy to ride. That said, I've obviously no basis for comparison0

I hope you don't mind me bumping this but has anyone seen any good offers for road bikes in the sales? Same budget as the OP. Thanks0

Likewise, I'm moving to Cyprus in March and would like to get into cycling with a similar budget. Especially with the sales at the moment.:j
Planning for my future early

The Allez is always mentioned for these type of requests, quite simply because they are great bikes for the money.
Perhaps try a Boardman, only available at Halfords though, so no competition regarding prices.0
