Think hard before upgrading a 3GS see here iOS 5.1.1 is fine but there are no improvements in iOS 6 for 3GS users.

  • Don't shout at me if I am mising something, but I have a 3GS and simply go to SETTINGS - GENERAL - SOFTWARE UPDATE to do it. I updated (takes a while) without problem to 5.1 and it works fine. I have hesitated for 6.01 simply because of space (uses more than half a gig).

The OP is still on a version of software that doesn't support wireless software updates.

I am running 6.0.1 on my iPhone 3GS; I updated it via iTunes on a Windows PC, some time back.
  • Why would you not?

Without a lot of messing about, iPhone upgrades are a one way trip.

4.3.5 works fine on my 3GS but beyond that reports of dissatisfaction with the general responsiveness of the phone are frequent.

Others may be happy with iOS 5+ on the phone but personally I would only take it as far as was needed to achieve the original objective.
