Unproductive is perhaps a little strong. Inefficient maybe. Protected from the real world compared to the private sector. What's required is better management I suspect. To change the culture. How it can be achieved I'm unsure.0 -

But how does on gauge the efficiency for a lesbian outreach worker, a street football coordinator or a real nappy campaigner?
Councils are past masters at shroud waving - axing the services people actually want, while defending their ideological empires (and their own inflated salaries, of course).0 -
So, if the UK does lose its AAA rating, what does this mean for the man on the street in terms of interest rates, cuts etc?
it seems to mean dearer petrol as the £ falls v $
we will have to see what happens on monday when the mrkets open for a better reaction
but the fact remains that osborne said he would be judged on keeping the AAA,well he`s lost it and i`ve judged...he must now resign
and btw for all those talking about this lot being in power for 2 years its now almost 3,and bloody miserable years they`ve been0 -
Just a point, I wonder if Osborne who is clearly now right in the s**t reverse the tax cut for people earning over £150000 by 5p in the next budget due to the extra interest on the country's debt. Probably not as we are not all in this together are we0

Councils will come under pressure from their local electorate. As to what services should be retained and those cut.
I was commenting on the large administrative functions within BIS. Where outsource providers such as Capita would ruthlessly cut costs.
Personally I would prefer them to remain as part of the public service rather than be privatised.0 -

.
They might come under pressure but how they choose to respond is quite another matter!
In my locality the burning issue is the dangerous state of our roads after a decade's deliberate neglect. Our 'representatives' see things differently - and their unelected 'officers' have a wholly different agenda, much of which seems motivated by what they read in the Guardian and the Independent.0 -

Top earners contribute 85% of all income tax paid even now.
Have no worries. We are need to put our hands into our pockets at some point in the future. So he burden will be shared.0 -

Retaining their position is the key target of most active politicians. So majority rule tends to come through on the end.
I'm sure councils that intend to raise council tax this year. Against the Governments wishes. Will hear from their local voters at the appropriate time.0 -

You are far more optimistic than I am. I've attended local meetings where issues have been raised year after year, only to be brushed aside by our 'representatives' , who still seem to get re-elected, no doubt by the tribal types who think national while voting local (in so far as they think at all).
The local government system is broken.0 -
The rumblings are starting for Osborne to resign this morning - David Hersdon for example has written an illuminating piece, but I for one know that when he goes they all go, he and Cameron will go down together on the sinking ship The HMS Great Britain - now more like Little Britain. Just wait til next week when the second rocket in petrol prices that I predicted kicks in - voters are always furious and unforgiving about that! Previously in past years it wasn't down to a weak and falling pound - this time it well and truly is and lands at the chancellors door!0
