Cillit Bang disaster - Help!

I regularly use Cillit Bang Power Cleaner and so far have found it to be very effective in cleaning the shower cubicle & sinks.

However i used it on my bath [a cast iron bath] and the results have been horrific-- the bath is completely ruined. I put a squirt of cleaner on bath -- i had a wet cloth in my hand & wiped it off immediately [ in seconds ].

The marks left by Cillitbang would not rub off and the bath is completely defaced.

I have e-mailed CillitBang re: giving me advice as to how to fix the problem and offered photos of the damage.

At the moment the options to me are, replacement of the bathroom suite (as the colour is no longer available to purchase a new bath). As this bath was in excellent condition I am devastated with the expense that this will involve, especially given the fact the product is advertised 'suitable for use for baths.'

Has anyone any advice re: what my rights are? I don't want to have to put in a new bathroom suite unless necessary - I'm hoping CillitBang will get back to me with a quick and easy solution (doubt it though!).

If I do have to replace the bathroom suite, where do I stand with CillitBang?

Thanks.

Aren't cast iron baths enamelled? Cillit Bang is not suitable for enamel. It has warnings about this.

Btw you can get baths re-enamelled I believe, so you wouldn't necessarily have to replace? I think you're on your own with regards to liability though.
  • Usually there is a warning not to use these products on enamelled surfaces. If there is one on the cillit bang container I dont think they can be held liable.

Have you checked to see if this is covered on your household insurance - Accidental damage?

Dang! It's mentioned in the instructions. It'd probably work out more cost effective just to put in the new bathroom suite...

A cast iron bath would be VERY expensive - re-enammelling, as suggested would be a good idea and can be done in-situ.

Ather than that, if your bathroom is a little tired it's worth checking out the SCREWFIX offer of a completely new suite (Inc shower door) for about for £219 delivered.

    Just got mine delivered yesterday.:)

It is very easy to get carried away with these powerful cleaners. My wife destroyed the surface of our plastic loo seats with over-enthusiastic use of bleach.

Re-enamel is never quite as good, but worth a try. It is not easy to get a perfect finish. Get someone in to do it and ask to see one he has done before.

Out of interest, how much does bath re-enameling cost roughly? My baths are quite old. I don't want to replace with those cheap plastic baths so am considering having my existing ones re-enamelled.

    Hi,

No useful info re:bath, but I bought Cillit Bang universal cleaner and it clearly states on the bottle that it shouldn't be used on work prep surfaces - yet the Tv advert shows all these people using it on worktops, pans, chopping boards etc, so it is really confusing.

Very misleading - I bought it purely cos it was for 'universal' use and now have to use a separate product for cleaning the above places.

So if anyone has bought this particular product, please be cautious where you use it - might make your hands fall off or something! :D

There is a few differnt one, theres a universal, and a degreaser.
Degreaser is fine for worktops, unless you have wooden ones or marble (and probably granite)
Thats the one in Purple and green spray.
